Fireworks shows left to contractors following 2019 explosion in New Mexico that killed one firefighter

June 5, 2019 is a date that may be etched in the minds of Roswell residents forever. On that day 12 City of Roswell Fire Department firefighters suffered injuries when a warehouse near the Roswell International Air Center exploded. The firefighters were preparing fireworks for the Fourth of July when an aerial shell was ignited with an electric match, read an investigation from the New Mexico Fire Marshal’s office, leading to the ignition of other explosives in the building.

Massachusetts fire, police departments released from ‘70s-era diverse hiring consent decree

Lake Mills, area towns discuss EMS future

As Lake Mills continues to examine how its EMS service will look in the future, area towns had a glimpse of that as well last week. In a special common council meeting June 16, City Administrator Steve Wilke discussed options he outlined in a June 3 16-page memo to aldermen. The towns of Lake Mills, Waterloo, Milford and Aztalan had representatives in attendance.

How a drone helped fight De Pere apartment complex fire

No one was hurt, but six people are without a home after an apartment complex fire in De Pere Wednesday morning. As soon as the 911 call came in at 9:15, fire crews knew exactly what to expect and do to knock the fire down quickly. The 90-unit Crow’s Nest Apartments along the Fox River is one of many locations throughout the area known to firefighters as a “target hazard,” meaning they know it’s a building that will require many units to respond to help people evacuate.

Volunteer firefighters in northwest Wisconsin receive life saving fire suppression kits

Some volunteer firefighters in Wisconsin received a gift Wednesday that could save lives. The Acacia-Itasca Masonic Lodge of Superior presented three local fire departments with fire suppression units. The kits went to departments in the towns of Superior, Oakland, and Gordon. The lodge held fundraisers, including a Palm Sunday pancake breakfast to help purchase the units, which cost about $1,000 each.

Last Missing Portrait of 9/11 Victim Placed in Memorial Photo Wall in New York

How one city in Texas integrated mental health response into 911 dispatch systems

Each year, the Austin, Texas, Police Department (APD) call center diverts more than 80% of its calls to mental health clinicians, freeing police officers to focus on “hot calls,” such as life-threatening situations and robberies in progress. Since 2019, Integral Care, the city’s Local Mental Health and Intellectual and Developmental Disability Authority, has been integrated into APD’s computer-aided dispatch (CAD) system.
