PHOTOS: Two Elizabeth volunteer firefighters recently took the trip of a lifetime when they drove the town’s first firetruck along U.S. 20 from Elizabeth to Newport, Ore., a round-trip journey of more than 4,000 miles.
Bob “Hambone” Wand, who is retired from the Elizabeth Fire Department, and Jacob Krug, a current volunteer, left Elizabeth on June 17 in the 1½-ton 1937 Chevrolet Rotary Fire Pump firetruck.

Nearly four years ago, Brian Kyle “BK” Frizzell lost his sister, Haley Frizzell, and roommate David Angel Ortiz to a fire that was deliberately set at the Iconic Village Apartments in San Marcos. Haley, 19, was the youngest of five victims – along with Dru Estes, 20; Belinda Moats, 21; Ortiz, 21; and James Philip Miranda, 23 – who lost their lives on July 20, 2018.

The Philadelphia Fire Department (PFD) is welcoming 76 new members — 67 firefighter/EMTs and nine paramedics — into its ranks after a nine-month training program.
This year was the first live audience fire department graduation after the start of the pandemic. The fire department also celebrates 150 years in 2022.

A Wednesday night fire caused an estimated $150,000 damage to a downtown residence, firefighters say.
According to the Eau Claire Fire Department:
The fire was reported at 11:26 p.m. at 706 Hobart St.

Wisconsin's Technical College System is helping out Western Technical College in a major way. The system presented WTC with a check for $194,792 on Wednesday afternoon.
School officials said the funds will go toward Western's Youth Firefighter Training Program. It provides dual credits for high school students working to obtain their firefighter certification.

After 32 years with the Oshkosh Fire Department, Assistant Chief John Ziemer is set to retire Friday.
Ziemer has held several different roles with the Oshkosh Fire Department and city throughout his career. There will be a gathering Friday at 10 a.m. to celebrate Ziemer's years of service and his retirement at Station 15, 101 Court St.

Dane County Sheriff Kalvin Barrett says a home and two cars in the Town of Dunn are total losses after a fire.
Dane County Sheriff's Office PIO Elise Schaffer said the two homeowners were inside when they smelled smoke coming from the attached garage. They evacuated without injury.
Barrett credited first responders' quick actions with preventing more damage.

VIDEO: Logan Schneider thought his day was done on his family's cherry farm last week when it was really just beginning.
"Looking at what happened, I don't know how we both got out," he said.
Logan was riding a tractor in the orchard about 12 miles north of Wenatchee last week when a helicopter hit overhead powerlines and landed on top of him.

Maine is home to one of the most important training sites in the country for law enforcement canines.
That’s according to the people who pay for all of it.
State Farm Insurance has been funding arson dog purchasing and training since 1993. Heather Paul, the company's national arson dog program coordinator, said the average residential house fire costs them $45,000 to insure.

Peoria Fire Department is gearing up for fall recruitment by thinking outside the box to attract talent.
Interim Fire Chief Shawn Sollberger said recruitment numbers have been down for a while.
“What we’re used to is hundreds of people wanting to be a firefighter, and now we’re running into dozens of people wanting to be firefighter,” he said.

Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson announced his nominees for the Milwaukee Fire and Police Commission.
There are two vacant positions on the board, and Mayor Johnson is recommending Gerard Washington and Ruben A. Burgos for the seats.
According to a news release from the mayor's office, Washington has more than 25 years of experience working for the Milwaukee Fire Department.

A 5-year-old child was pulled from Lake Michigan near downtown Kenosha Tuesday evening, July 12.

A fire in Outagamie County over the weekend may have had the largest response to a fire in Wisconsin history.
Officials say a fire at a paper warehouse in the village of Combined Locks saw 700 responders from 67 fire departments.
The Pittsville Fire Department was asked to send a strike team to haul water, so they drove nearly two hours to assist throughout the night.

On Monday, a SpaceX booster test ended with an explosion on the Orbital Launch Pad triggering a fire near the base of the launch tower, as detailed in a recent video posted by NASASpaceflight. A pair of large fires in the late-1870s in Alpena altered the shape of the newly incorporated city and the development afterward remains visible today thanks to tougher building requirements inspired by the blazes.
The fires not only shifted future development from Alpena’s north side to the other side of the Thunder Bay River, but also led to the establishment of the city Fire Department and motivated what was then called the Alpena Common Council to draft and implement new zoning and building codes to help bolster safety.

The New Britain Fire Department and Local 992 have come to an agreement to randomly drug test staff members.
The agreement will test a third of the department yearly. That is about 45 people of the 130 on staff. Chief Raul Ortiz says it’s a robust and extensive policy.
In January, a New Britain firefighter died at his Southington home.
