Back-to-back shark bite incidents cause Florida county to close waters

The waters off Walton County, Florida, closed after back-to-back shark bite incidents Friday. Both incidents occurred in Walton County — which is in the Florida Panhandle — and not near a boat, but officials are unclear how far the attacks happened from land, said Mackenzie McClintock, a spokesperson for the South Walton Fire District.

Two firefighters and a street department worker rescued from dam in Chippewa Falls boat incident

Three people were rescued from the Glen Loch Dam in Chippewa Falls Wednesday. According to Chippewa Falls Fire and Emergency Services, crews were dispatched to Erickson Park for reports of a boat stuck on the dam. Responders found two firefighters and one street department worker in the boat. They were working on repairing safety buoys above the dam when they were overcome by the current, according to the release.

Wisconsin lets you add emergency contacts to your driver’s license record

It’s time to update your driver’s license. A new initiative from Wisconsin’s Division of Motor Vehicles gives you the option to add emergency contact information. This will be accessible as part of your DMV record. The emergency contact law was passed to give you peace of mind. If you’re in a crash or have a medical emergency, officials can call your loved ones much quicker with your identification.

Fire suppression system helps contain fire outside aluminum die casting company in Madison

The Madison Fire Department is crediting a fire suppression system for preventing the spread of a fire outside of an aluminum die casting company on Wednesday. Spokesperson Cynthia Schuster said firefighters were called to Kipp Corporation, 166 S. Fair Oaks Ave., for an alarm investigation. The call was upgraded to a full structure fire response when eyewitnesses confirmed the presence of smoke and flames.

VIDEO: Indiana auto repair shop destroyed by fire; cause under investigation

A Clarksville auto shop was destroyed by a fire Thursday afternoon, according to fire officials. Clarksville Fire Chief Brandon Skaggs said crews were called around 2:45 p.m. to Appeleaf Lane about a structure fire. A witness on the scene said the building was an auto repair shop. Skaggs said firefighters arrived in about 5 minutes, and the building was fully engulfed, with flames going through every window and door.

Good Earth recalls 1.2 million lights after multiple fires and 1 death

More than 1.2 million Good Earth Rechargeable integrated Lights sold nationwide are being recalled due to multiple fires — one deadly — as the product's battery can overheat and ignite its plastic casing, according to a notice posted Thursday by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. One person died and another was treated for smoke inhalation when the product overheated and caused a fire in their home last year, according to Mount Prospect, Illinois-based Good Earth.

Maine first responders are using a new device to transport newborns and mothers to the hospital

Sheriff’s department investigating theft of nearly 100 fire hydrants in one California county this year

Authorities are investigating the theft of nearly 100 fire hydrants in Los Angeles County this year, sheriff’s officials said Monday. Some 85 hydrants have been stolen in unincorporated areas of the county, and another 14 in Lynwood, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Beaver Dam Fire Department To Conduct Multi-Jurisdictional Training At Bayshore Apartments

Lincoln County fire officials say smoke detectors saved family in Merrill

When a fire breaks out in your home, you only have minutes to get to safety, and the family in a home off of Townline Road in Merrill learned that after a fire broke out in the front of the house. The fire first started in the bedroom of the family's three-month old daughter, but thankfully, the Pine River Volunteer Fire Department says her parents moved her into their bedroom on the other side of the house, so everyone made it out safely.

VIDEO: Monster truck soars too high, causing injuries and panic at event in Maine

Mike Hersom's three-year-old son is a big fan of monster trucks. Typically, when they get the chance to go see the real thing in person, he jumps at it. That's precisely what Hersom did this past weekend when he bought tickets to the Renegade Monster Truck tour, hosted at Topsham Fairgrounds. "We had gone to the event last year and my son loved it, so obviously we were thinking, let's go again this year," Hersom said.
