A work site on the west side was excavated for a natural gas leak Wednesday morning, the Madison Fire Department said.
Construction workers at a site near the West Towne Mall reported a leak around 8:45 a.m. after they struck a gas line while doing grading and paving work along Mineral Point Road.
Ladder 2 responded, and firefighters heard gas rushing from the 2-inch pipeline and ordered all equipment within a 200-foot radius to be shut down.

Investigators believe lightning sparked an early morning barn fire near the Town of Chase.
The Pulaski fire chief says they responded just before 5 AM after the property owner at 811 County Highway C reported seeing a lightning strike, and a nearby barn quickly caught fire.
Fortunately, no people or animals were involved or hurt, and firefighters were able to keep the fire from spreading to nearby buildings and a farmhouse.
