There are over 10,600 home fires that are started by grills each year, according to the National Fire Protection Association. During the summer, and especially in the upper Midwest, data also shows a significant increase in homeowners' insurance claims due to fires started by grilling activities.

80 years ago, a gas-soaked roof and WWII created a perfect storm for the Connecticut circus tragedy

VIDEO/PHOTO: July 6 marks the 80th remembrance of the deadliest single building or building complex fire in Connecticut history. The infamous Hartford Circus Fire happened on July 6, 1944. An estimated 168 people died that day, and experts say there were almost certainly more who lost their lives. Natalie Belanger, a public programs manager for the Connecticut Museum of Culture and History, estimates there were between 8,000 and 9,000 people under the big top that sweltering summer afternoon.

Why mass shootings and violence increase in the summer

Violence and mass shootings often surge in the summer months, especially around the Fourth of July, historically one of the deadliest days of the year. A flurry of shootings around the holiday a year ago left more than a dozen people dead and over 60 wounded. Just two years ago, another mass shooting at a Fourth of July parade left seven people dead near Chicago.

Nonprofit pays off mortgage for family of Sun Prairie fire captain killed in explosion

VIDEO: A nonprofit paid off the mortgage on a family home of a Sun Prairie fire captain killed in the line of duty nearly six years ago, the organization revealed Tuesday. Capt. Corey Barr was killed in the July 10, 2018, explosion as he was helping people evacuate. The explosion leveled businesses and homes in downtown Sun Prairie, and also injured firefighter Ryan Welch.

Madison Fire Department begins fire prevention, protection services in Town of Burke

Monday marked the first day of the new month and the first day of new responsibilities for the Madison Fire Department, which will now provide fire prevention and protection services in the Town of Burke. MFD has provided emergency medical services in the town since 2016. In the past, the Sun Prairie Fire Department has responded to fires in Burke.

Names released of 6 family members that died in Necedah house fire

Three adults and three children have died following a fire early Sunday morning in Necedah. Around 2:30 a.m. crews were called to a home on Morros Mile Road for a house fire with people still inside. When crews arrived several people were in the driveway, however, six people were reported to be inside the home.

VIDEO: Fire officials say massive barn fire in Illinois caused an estimated $1M in damages

A large fire erupted at a barn in north suburban Woodstock on Monday, causing an estimated $1 million in damages, fire officials said. According to officials with the Woodstock Fire/Rescue District, the fire broke out at around 10:25 a.m. in the 1600 block of South Rose Farm Road. Firefighters arrived at the scene within six minutes and came upon a large barn that had been completely engulfed in flames, officials said.

Seattle Fire Department unveils new rescue watercraft as more people head to the shore

Man saved by Massachusetts’ first ever whole blood transfusion from car crash site

It took 45 minutes for firefighters to get a 35-year-old man out of a “heavily damaged” car following a car crash on Saturday, officials said. The man’s injuries were extensive, with low blood pressure, shock and internal bleeding. Quickly, firefighters and paramedics decided to try a new lifesaving method starting at the crash site: whole blood transfusion.

Three firefighters were injured after two giant store signs came crashing down at the scene of a fire in Washington Heights. Flames broke out at 1281 St Nicholas Ave. near 174th Street just before 2:30 p.m. Saturday. Salt Lake City Fire Department unveils state-of the-art bright green fire truck

Around 3:30 a.m. on June 28, a call came into dispatch about a possible fire at an apartment in the 3200 block of East Parkside Boulevard, a release from the Appleton Fire Department stated.

Northcentral Technical College in Wausau receives $25K grant for youth firefighter training

VIDEO: Northcentral Technical College was presented with a ceremonial check of $25,000 Wednesday morning for a youth firefighter training grant. NTC was one of four winners of the Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services grant. The money will fund the school’s Youth Firefighter Academy, a partnership with Central Fire and EMS District and Abbotsford and Colby High Schools.

VIDEO: Man critically injured in fire sparked by charging lithium-ion battery in New York apartment building

One man remains in critical condition after an intense fire at a Brooklyn apartment building that firefighters say was sparked by a charging lithium-ion battery. The fire broke out inside the building just before 6:40 a.m. Thursday on Avenue M in the Midwood section. At least four people were hurt in the fire.

Protecting the protectors: West Virginia's firefighters, police officers gain partial-disability benefits

Firefighters and police officers are brotherhoods that intersect when the public calls, and recently, when there’s a call for change in the law regarding partial-disability benefits. "I see zero drawbacks with this law [House Bill 5188]," Cpt. Steve McCormick of the Huntington Fire Department said. House Bill 5188 received unanimous support during this year’s regular session.
