NASA map captures extent of punishing heat in U.S.

The U.S. has contended with unrelenting temperatures this summer, and a map from NASA paints a dire picture of the scale of those persistent heat waves. The map, which consists of a snapshot of temperatures nationwide for July 10, used satellite images — along with a complex mathematical model known as the Goddard Earth Observing System — to create a kind of color code, with dark red showing areas that reached highs of 104 degrees Fahrenheit, according to the NASA Earth Observatory, a program that examines the impact of climate change.

Michigan firefighters battle recycling center blaze for 11 hours, confirm lightning strike caused fire

'Emerging Threat' Xylazine Use Continues to Spread Across the United States

Illicit use of the veterinary tranquilizer xylazine continues to spread across the United States. The drug, which is increasingly mixed with fentanyl, often fails to respond to the opioid overdose reversal medication naloxone and can cause severe necrotic lesions. A report released by Millennium Health, a specialty lab that provides medication monitoring for pain management, drug treatment, and behavioral and substance use disorder treatment centers across the country, showed the number of urine specimens collected and tested at the US drug treatment centers were positive for xylazine in the most recent 6 months.

Fishing boat catches fire in Two Rivers harbor

Appleton officials offer safety reminders about battery disposal

No one hurt in small fire at Chippewa Falls restaurant

According to Fire Chief Jason Thom of Chippewa Falls Fire and Emergency Services, they were called to the restaurant around 2:30 p.m. for a report of a fire in the basement. FDNY Commissioner Laura Kavanagh to step down, help find replacement

Fire damages home and car in Shawano

VIDEOS/PHOTOS: Several departments from the Shawano area responded to a fire at the intersection of E Center Street and S Sawyer Street in Shawano on Thursday night. Fire crews tell us they arrived on-scene at around 6:30 p.m. and believe there was one person inside when the fire started. Shawano Fire Department Assistant Fire Chief Chuck Felts tells us that they got out safely before crews arrived and nobody was hurt, though some rescue personnel were treated on-scene for heat exhaustion.

Rhinelander Fire Department set to host Fill the Boot to raise money for Muscular Dystrophy Association

Firefighters are filling their boots for charity this week. The Rhinelander Fire Department (RFD) is raising money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). This is an annual tradition that raises thousands of dollars for research and treatment. It has helped over 5,000 families for free. “We’re just happy to be able to give back," said Andrea Boos, a firefighter-paramedic with the Rhinelander Fire Department and the coordinator between RFD and MDA.

Florida fire & rescue company the first in the country to use new technology

VIDEO: Southern Manatee Fire & Rescue is the first in the country to use a one-of-a-kind piece of equipment that aids in emergencies. In collaboration with NASA and the company Squishy Robotics, the robot device is designed to reduce response time and keep first responders safe. The co-founder of Squishy Robotics says the robot was initially intended for planetary exploration, but an alternative use was found.
