Basement fire strikes Milwaukee home, 8 residents evacuated

A fire broke out in a Milwaukee residence early Monday, April 3, but was contained before spreading, and no injuries have been reported. The Milwaukee Fire Department told CBS 58 that the call came in around 12:30 a.m. for a fire at a 2.5 story residence near S. 17th and W. Mineral. Firefighters responded to the scene and were able to control the fire, which was contained to the basement and did not spread to other parts of the house.

One person dead after Dunn County house fire

One person has died after a house in Dunn County caught fire Sunday afternoon. According to Dunn County Sheriff Kevin Bygd, someone called reporting a structure fire just before 2:30 p.m. in the N5700 block of County Trunk E in the town of Red Cedar. Officials arrived to heavy smoke and flames. Firefighters found a 74-year-old man inside the home, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

16 people displaced after Mount Horeb motel fire

A fire Sunday afternoon at the Karakahl Country Inn in Mount Horeb displaced 16 people who were staying there, according to the Mount Horeb Area Joint Fire Department. A fire broke out at the motel, located at 101 Perimeter Rd., around 2 p.m. Sunday. Fire crews arrived to find smoke and fire coming from the building.

VIDEO: Officials say massive fire at New York ambulance depot not suspicious

Officials said Sunday that a five-alarm fire that ripped through an ambulance depot in Freeport was not considered suspicious. The massive fire broke out Saturday at an ambulance service building on Commercial Street and left a shell of structures and damages. Video captured plumes of black smoke billowing into the air.

Fiery derailments renew Americans' focus on railroad safety

Americans are renewing their focus on railroad safety after a string of recent derailments, especially two fiery ones involving hazardous chemicals in Ohio and Minnesota that prompted evacuations. Federal regulators and members of Congress are urging railroads to do more to prevent derailments. They want standards for the trackside detectors used to help identify equipment problems, more notice to states about hazardous chemicals they are hauling, and at least two people at the helm of freight trains.

Texas fire department celebrates 150 years of peril and progress

Six La Crosse area fire departments train for home fire

Firefighters from six La Crosse area departments put their skills to the test during the Shelby Fire Department Live Fire Training Evolution Saturday afternoon near St. Joseph Ridge. The firefighters geared up and battled flames that were ignited in two burn rooms inside a house structure. According to Shelby Fire Department officials, the training allows a rotation of crews to advance a hose line into a burn room and extinguish the blaze.

Madison Fire Department crews worked through the night Friday, battling a three-alarm fire on the city's south side. Officials said the fire was stabilized Saturday morning, but crews remained on scene. No injuries were reported, but a building that officials said housed tire pallets and over 50 vehicles was heavily damaged.

Lightning strike causes fire at New Glarus home

A lightning strike was to blame for a fire at a home in New Glarus, officials said Saturday. Crews were called to a home just before 7:30 p.m. Friday after the strike was reported. Firefighters found flames coming from a light fixture in the kitchen. The light fixture was removed, and officials said a small fire was found and extinguished in the attic space.

Tenants evacuated safely during apartment fire in Howard

Firefighters from around Brown County are still fighting an apartment fire in Howard 90 minutes after the emergency call came in. They’ve been at the scene on the 2600-block of Lavender Lane, near Cardinal Lane, since just after 4:30 a.m. They arrived to see flames shooting through the roof. A box alarm was issued, bringing in fire crews from other departments, including Green Bay and Pulaski.

10 people forced out of homes by apartment fire in Oshkosh

A fire forced 10 people living in an apartment building on Oshkosh’s Evans St. out of their homes Thursday night. The Oshkosh Fire Department was sent to the apartment building just before 8:30 and found smoke and flames coming from one apartment on the second floor. It took 20 minutes to bring the fire under control.
