In one New York town, emergencies are mostly handled by teenagers balancing life, death and high school

The legacy of Darien-EMS Post 53 is a long one for many of the teenagers who staff it. “Growing up in Darien, you've known what Post is since you were a little kid,” 15-year-old Marin Nehro, a first-year volunteer, said. “Most of the people in here have wanted to do it for a really long time.” For the past 53 years, teenagers like Nehro have provided the town of Darien with much of its emergency medical service, helping deliver babies, navigate a global pandemic and provide lifesaving care to their community.

Fire rescue team receives Fire Safe South Carolina designation for 2nd year in a row

Hail batters concertgoers at Red Rocks in Colorado, seven hospitalized: 'All of a sudden, boom!'

Apartment fire displaces family in Sun Prairie

A family is without a place to stay after a fire burned through their apartment in Sun Prairie. Sun Prairie Fire & Rescue along with Sun Prairie EMS and Police responded to the 200 block of Foxdale Drive for a fire at an 8-unit multi-family residential building. Smoke was coming from the ground floor unit.

Family of four displaced after Madison house fire

A Madison family is displaced after their home went up in flames Wednesday afternoon, fire officials said. According to the Madison Fire Department, officials were dispatched to the 2600 block of Badger Lane at 3:30 p.m. after callers reported thick black smoke. Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire from the inside quickly, but they said that some hotspots in the ceiling and attic lingered.

Wisconsin DNR: More wildfires this year due to drought

According to the Wisconsin DNR, this year's wildfire season is outpacing 2022. Fires have burned nearly three times the amount of acres compared to last year. The season is usually March, April, and May with June often being a wet and green month. However, drought conditions have caused more fires.

Device designed by University of Miami graduate students may help protect firefighters from harmful chemicals

Chitvan Killawala and Umer Bakali want to help protect firefighters from a potential threat. Their strategy to do so does not involve creating a better forcible-entry axe or a thicker face shield but deploying a device no bigger than a USB flash drive. The two University of Miami graduate students have developed a special sensor capable of detecting the real-time presence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the warm zone at structural fires.

Firefighters in one Indiana county concerned about responding to warehouse fires

Mississippi Senate honors the state's first African American fire chief

A pioneering firefighter is getting some overdue recognition. The Mississippi Senate and the City of Starkville have honored former Starkville fire Chief Willie Johnson with a resolution from the state. Johnson was the first African American fire chief in the state of Mississippi. Johnson’s legacy began in 1988 when he took on the unprecedented role.

Governor visits Chippewa Falls fire station, praises shared revenue bill

Green Bay Metro Fire Department adds two new rigs to its fleet

The Green Bay Metro Fire Department has two new fire trucks in its fleet. Of the two trucks, one will go to Station No. 3 in Green Bay, and the other will go to Station No. 8 in Allouez. The new rigs are replacing two older trucks. Battalion Chief Ray Fuiten said the older rigs are being placed in its reserve fleet.
