Being a firefighter is dangerous, but one cause takes their lives more than the job itself. Those in the industry of saving lives are working toward solutions to save their own.
Beyond the heavy oxygen packs, to masks, to jackets, emergency responders carry a heavy weight. Like all the gear they wear, all of the calls pile on.

PHOTOS: Fire crews could be seen battling massive flames at an abandoned warehouse along the 4700 block of Rittiman Road on Thursday night.
SAFD Chief Charles Hood said no one appeared to be hurt in the fire, which sparked shortly before 9 p.m. and drew a response of nearly 40 units. A cause has not yet been determined.

VIDEO: The Seattle Fire Department (SFD) and Seattle City Light are rolling out a new Energy Response Unit to address electrical fires in substations and underground faults.
The unit includes 44 firefighters specifically trained to fight energy-related fires, a new rig with 11,000 pounds of carbon dioxide and 600 feet of hose line.

VIDEO/PHOTOS: The Willard Fire Department has been donating its old fire hoses to the Dickerson Park Zoo for a few years.
Fire hoses are required to pass a pressure test for use. If they fail, they are used for training purposes or are disposed of. The Dickerson Park Zoo asked Willard Fire if they could have the unused fire hoses and Willard Fire said yes.

VIDEO: A Milwaukee Fire Department ambulance was involved in a serious crash Thursday morning near 18th Street and North Avenue.
Chief Aaron Lipski tweeted that it was a reckless driver who hit the ambulance.
The driver of the car that struck the ambulance crossed over the center lane and struck the ambulance head on, the fire department said.

St. Louis City firefighters battled a huge fire overnight at an old north city Catholic Church that was turned into an indoor skate park. The fire was so intense that the embers spread to a building two blocks away.
What's left of the old St. Liborius Church is ‘Sk8 Liborius,’ on the Hogan and North Market streets, until the huge fire gutted the building overnight.

PHOTOS: The anniversary of American independence has added significance this year for the Friends of Engine 64 Inc., a nonprofit that now owns the Hahn pumper that Chestertown Volunteer Fire Company put in service on July 4, 1983.
What is known as Six-Four served Chestertown until 2010, when it was donated to a fire company in Brierfield for what would be a decade of added service for several communities in rural Alabama.

Panama City Beach in Florida is now the deadliest in the U.S. so far in 2023 after three more deaths this past weekend.
Despite double red flag warnings, which mean no swimming is allowed in the Gulf, heavy rip currents led to the three drownings and dozens of rescues. National Weather Service statistics show that Panama City has had seven rip current-related deaths in the past nine days, more surf zone fatalities than any other beach in the U.

A non-profit organization and Fox Valley community are making a difference for children in emergency situations.
The Calumet County Sheriff’s Office and Chilton First Responders received REACH bags.
These bags are filled with goodies meant to comfort children during traumatic circumstances.

Roswell Fire Department (RFD) wants 12 new hires this July so they can build their staff back up to capacity.
For what may be the first time ever, the RFD is hosting open tryouts on July 8 from 7-11 a.m. at the Louis Jones Training Center. The RFD is doing open tryouts in an attempt to take the anxiety out of the testing process and is hoping to diversify the force.
