Duane Ashenbrenner retires from Shawano Fire Department

It was 1962, and Duane Ashenbrenner had just turned 21. That was the minimum age to join the Shawano Fire Department, and he didn’t waste time signing on. More than 60 years later, in late 2023, Ashenbrenner retired as deputy fire chief from the department. “He is the kind of guy who, when they say they’ll take care of something, they take care of it,” said Fire Chief Shawn Borlace, who is going on eight years as chief.

RSV in Wisconsin; cases, deaths on the rise

Having a child in the hospital is a difficult and emotional time for parents. Cooper Henry is almost 18 months old. He has been in the hospital three times with RSV since he was born. "Watching your child go through that is so scary," said his mother, Sara Schladweiler. "He was on full high-flow oxygen for three days.

New York subway train derailment causes 'severe' service disruption

VIDEO: Thursday's subway train derailment on the Upper West Side is causing major delays for the 1, 2, and 3 train lines, according to the MTA. MTA officials said the first car of a 1 train made contact with a disabled train that was vandalized just north of the 96th Street station around 3 p.m., causing the first car of the passenger train to derail.

Tennessee firefighter who fought PTSD inspires law that gives other service members a new pathway to treatment

Firefighting is a strenuous and stressful job. The post-traumatic stress disorder rate among firefighters is estimated to be higher than the rate in the military. As of Jan. 1, there is a state law in Tennessee that can help firefighters get better while still getting paid. The James "Dustin" Samples Act honors Samples, a Cleveland, Tennessee firefighter who bravely fought PTSD on the job.

Nearly 50,000 massage guns recalled in US due to fire and burn hazards

Close to 50,000 massage guns sold in the United States have been recalled due to fire and burn hazards, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced on Thursday. The recall involves Homedics' "Therapist Select Percussion Personal Massagers," which can overheat while charging. The CPSC said there have been 17 reports of the massage guns overheating, with one report of a consumer suffering a burnt thumb.

Lodi Fire Department wraps a historic year with new leadership

It has been a lot of a year for Lodi Area Fire Chief Nate Sievers, with big changes still on the horizon. At the start of 2023, after four years as assistant chief, Sievers was appointed fire chief, officially taking over from retiring Chief Bobby Annen on Feb. 1. At the end of the year, the department had responded to 132 calls, almost double the previous year’s total of 74.

Firefighters battle blaze at Dolphins star Tyreek Hill's home in South Florida

10 years ago: Ballpark burns in Michigan

Dump truck catches on fire on Highway 41 in Town of Oconto

Oconto Fire & Rescue responded to an early-morning vehicle fire on Highway 41 near the Town of Oconto. At approximately 5 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 3, Oconto Fire & Rescue responded to a call of a dump truck on fire in the southbound lane of Highway 41 near S Range Line Road in the Town of Oconto. The caller said the fire continued flaring up despite using a fire extinguisher on it.

Apartment fire in Racine displaces 3 residents and causes $60K in damage

Residents, dog escape duplex fire in Beloit

PHOTO: Firefighters say the occupants and a family dog got out safely when a duplex caught fire in Beloit. The fire started around 2 p.m. Tuesday in a duplex in the 100 block of Bluff Street, according to a Facebook post by the Beloit Fire Department. Due to the amount of fire, the age of the home and the weather conditions, the fire department called in other agencies for help.

VIDEO: Middle School in Washington, known to be 'dangerous and derelict,' heavily damaged by fire

The former Gault Middle School in Tacoma is on fire early Wednesday morning. The Tacoma Fire Department (TFD) responded to the building at around 4 a.m. Crews chose not to go inside because the building has been designated as "dangerous and derelict."
