Fire department battles flames, smoke at northeast Houston shopping center for several hours

The fire was first reported around 1 a.m. at the Jensen Square complex, located on Jensen near Hurley. The shopping center has multiple shops and businesses. Voluntary North Carolina firefighter cancer registry shows 7 cancer cases at one department

Over the years, materials used to build houses and other buildings have changed, with some of those materials containing carcinogens that firefighters and first responders inhale when responding to calls and cleaning up after the fire is out. Tennessee Senate passes bill to provide volunteer firefighters with $600 training stipend

The Tennessee Senate passed a bill that would aid volunteer firefighters in the state. Senate Bill 778 would provide volunteer firefighters with an annual payment of $600 upon completion of at least 30 hours of training. “Our volunteer firefighters put their lives on the line and give up their time to keep our communities safe,” said Bell, a former volunteer firefighter in Tennessee.

3 Years After An Explosion Rocked Wisconsin's Only Refinery, Superior Is Still Waiting For Answers

Three years ago, an explosion rocked Wisconsin's only oil refinery in Superior, injuring three dozen people and causing a temporary evacuation of city residents. But investigators with the U.S. Chemical Safety Board have yet to release a final report on their investigation into the blast. The Duluth News Tribune first reported that former employees and government auditors found that the agency has faced a shortage of staffing and unfilled board positions that have contributed to a backlog of investigations.

Red Cross assisting Milwaukee residents after Merrill Park apartment building catches fire

People from about 28 apartment units are being assisted by the Red Cross after their Merrill Park apartment building caught fire Tuesday morning. A large apartment in the 600 block of North 31st Street caught fire around 10 a.m., fire officials say. The American Red Cross of Wisconsin said in a statement that they are in the process of connecting residents with temporary housing and other immediate needs.

Two killed, one hurt in two-vehicle Vernon County crash caused when turkey hits car

Two people were killed and another was injured in a two-vehicle crash caused at about 7:30 a.m. Tuesday when a turkey hit a car on State Hwy. 56 at Venner Hollow Road in the town of Genoa. After the turkey hit the front of a 2007 Ford Escape, the driver lost control, skidded into the ditch and back across the center line, where it struck a 2011 Dodge pickup head-on, according to the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office.

Texas fire department sees its most diverse candidate pool ever, but there’s more work to do

This year, the Austin Fire Department said it has gotten a 10% increase in interested African Americans compared to 2019. Its largest demographic group is Hispanic candidates — a more than 21% increase. Overall, nearly 75% of people who submitted a cadet interest card are diversity targets, which means they belong to a minority group.

Deaths of 3 New York firefighters spark mass cancer screening in city fire department

Firefighters didn’t worry about getting cancer when Tim Downes joined the Syracuse Fire Department in 1985. He’d wear a helmet and other gear caked in soot, carbon and other toxic residue from fires and think nothing of it. “You were supposed to be salty,” he says. But in 2008 Downes was diagnosed with stage 4 lymphoma, a cancer of the lymphatic system, part of the body’s germ fighting network.
