VIDEO/PHOTOS: A massive fire destroyed a historic church in Philadelphia's Tacony neighborhood. Firefighters were able to bring the flames under control around 7 p.m. Fire Commissioner Adam Thiel said the building was a total loss. Built in 1884, St. Leo had been a community landmark in Tacony for more than 135 years.

Firefighter shortage poses problem as number of California fires continues to rise

Fires in Fresno are up 50% compared to this time last year, and with the hottest months still ahead, officials say that percentage is expected to rise. Firefighters are expecting 2021 to be a record-breaking year. Crews have already put out 2,500 fires this year. That's nearly half of last year's total in just over four months.

Firefighters’ lawsuit over cargo ship blasts in Florida moves to federal court

A lawsuit filed by 10 Jacksonville firefighters who were injured last year while fighting a cargo ship fire at Blount Island has been transferred to federal court, News4Jax learned Friday. The lawsuit, filed by the Pajcic & Pajcic law firm, holds Hoegh Autoliners and several other companies responsible for the firefighters’ injuries stemming from the cargo ship fire and resulting explosion.

4-year-old boy becomes Texas fire chief through Make-A-Wish foundation

U.S. COVID cases down 30% over past two weeks as country averages 2 million shots per day

The rate of average daily new COVID cases in the U.S. fell to below 41,000 over the weekend, down 30% from two weeks ago and the lowest level since September, Johns Hopkins University data showed. The country has reported an average of 2 million vaccinations per day over the past week, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data, down 40% from its peak level.

Madison firefighters put out car fire on I-39

In just 12 minutes, Madison firefighters put out a car fire that temporarily shut down a lane of I-39 Sunday afternoon, according to Madison Fire Department. According to WisDOT, the right northbound lane of I-39 at Cottage Grove Rd closed around 2 p.m. due to a car fire. The Madison Fire Department (MFD) said firefighters responded to a fire that started in the car’s engine.

Remembering heroes and 'carrying the load' through Eau Claire

La Crosse Fire Department holds fire safety event

The La Crosse Fire Department has teamed up with the American Red Cross to make sure the people of the community are safe from fires. In a national campaign called “Sound the Alarm. Save a Life,” the fire department and Red Cross are providing in=person home fire education and resources. In some cases, they are even installing free smoke alarms.

Green Bay Fire Recruits Demonstrate Skills During Graduation Event

The Green Bay Metro Fire Department welcomed ten new firefighters on Friday. The recruits officially graduated from an eight-week course by completing a series of demonstrations at the NWTC Public Safety Building. “In the last eight weeks we have spent time covering our administrative policies and procedures, EMS responses, fire training – and fire training is broken down into three different subgroups- engine company operations, truck company operations, and one is special operations,” said Training Captain Jordan Waack.

Wisconsin Public Service opens applications for 2021 Rewarding Responders Grant

The Wisconsin Public Service (WPS) Foundation is accepting applications for their Rewarding Responders Grant. According to a release, the WPS Foundation’s grant assists emergency response agencies by purchasing lifesaving equipment or vital training for their members. WPS is offering $50,000 through its grant this year.

West Virginia dive team member talks about finding alleged murder weapon in lake

Follow Up: Body Found at the Scene of an Appleton Fire

Fire crews in Appleton found the body of a man while they battled a fire last night (May 5th). Crews were called to the 1600 block of South Mayfair Drive at around 11:00 PM, where they battled a fire for about 45 minutes. After they brought the blaze under control, they found the body of a man said to be the lone occupant of the home.

Toddler seriously injured in Fond Du Lac County tractor accident

A toddler sustained serious injuries after she was run over by a tractor Wednesday, May 5, in Fond du Lac County. Rescue personnel were called to the scene of the accident on Hickory Road around 2:53 p.m. in the town of Byron. According to the Fond du Lac County Sheriff's Office, a 38-year-old Fond du Lac woman was driving a southbound Kubota tractor when she struck a bump, causing the child to fall and subsequently struck by the tractor.
