Model T fire truck turns 100 in North Carolina city

A symbol of Southport’s pride and heritage is celebrating a special birthday this year. Dropped off by rail car in 1922, Brunswick County’s first fire truck – the red Ford Model T that is turning 100 years old this year – became more than just another piece of equipment at the Southport Fire Department.

I-94 eastbound closed near Osseo for over an hour due to grass fire

PHOTO: Interstate 94 is reopened after a grass fire closed the eastbound lanes from Northfield to Osseo Tuesday afternoon. The closure, which lasted about an hour and a half, backed up traffic for over a mile as crews worked to put out the fire along the Interstate Tuesday. According to Hixton Fire and Rescue, the fire burned about four acres and began in the median of the Interstate.

Sprinkler system puts out fire at hotel on Madison’s far east side

An automatic fire sprinkler system put out a fire at a hotel on Madison’s far east side Monday morning, the city’s fire department said. In a news release Tuesday afternoon, the Madison Fire Department said the fire broke out around 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Microtel Inn and Suites in the 2100 block of East Springs Drive.

VIDEO: Massive 3-alarm fire destroys bowling alley in Pennsylvania

A massive fire has burned down a bowling alley in Levittown, Bucks County. The fire started around 5:15 a.m. Wednesday at Levittown Lanes on the 8800 block of New Falls Road. Firefighters arrived on the scene and quickly struck a second alarm. The fire reached three alarms around 6:20 a.m. Chopper 6 was over the scene as a portion of the roof caved in.

Federal broadband network helps North Carolina first responders communicate better in a crisis

Texas: Should City of Austin employees be allowed to use low-THC medical marijuana?

Austin leaders are considering whether city employees should be allowed to use low-THC medical marijuana. According to a memo dated March 25, the conversation started after House Bill 1535 became a Texas law on Sept. 1, 2021. HB 1535 adds all forms of cancer and post-traumatic stress disorder to the list of qualifying conditions and doubles the amount of THC allowed in marijuana products from half a percent to 1%.

111th anniversary of Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire in New York commemorated

Salem Lakes collects fire equipment for Ukraine

A truckload of donations left the Village of Salem Lakes Fire Department Monday, March 28 after a drive to collect more than 80 fire coats and dozens of helmets and tools to support first responders in Ukraine.

Milwaukee firefighters are looking to fight the opioid crisis with new overdose prevention kits. Every Milwaukee Fire Department truck, engine and MED unit now carries these HOPE kits. Inside is two doses of Narcan, fentanyl test strips and CPR gear. Firefighters will give them out to anyone that wants one for free.

Firefighters battled a three-alarm blaze overnight in the Bronx. The FDNY said the flames broke out early Tuesday morning on East 165th Street between Prospect and Union avenues in Morrisania. As CBS2's Elijah Westbrook reported, the fire appears to be out, but it sparked a three-alarm response. Video showed the flames and smoke billowing out from the roof of the building.

Firefighters in some Maine communities working shorter weeks under new union contracts

Maine fire departments are moving toward shorter workweeks for first responders under new union contracts. Orono and Old Town are two of five communities where firefighters recently have approved contracts that reduce their workweek from the traditional 56 hours to 42. The reduction is part of an effort to create better work-life balance for first responders and attract new firefighters to the field, according to the Professional Firefighters of Maine union.
