Union Pacific train stopped in Somers Saturday to extinguish small fire in caboose

Aportion of a Union Pacific train northbound through Kenosha County caught fire and had to be stopped in the Village of Somers to extinguish the blaze Saturday morning. Firefighters and emergency personnel responded to the incident around 10:40 a.m. as reports of a fire in the train’s caboose were radioed from the train operator in the Village of Pleasant Prairie.

Waupun anticipates large training exercise for area emergency personnel

It would be misleading to say that Waupun is looking forward to an emergency, but many are eager to join the Integrated Emergency Management Course (IEMC) scheduled for April 25 through April 28. The event will give emergency personnel a chance to enact a crisis as a dry run to something that all hope will never happen.

Madison Fire Chief Steven Davis retires after more than 32 years of service

Madison’s fire chief hung up his helmet Friday as he retired after more than 32 years of service. Chief Steven Davis was Madison’s eleventh career fire chief and said firefighting has been a true calling for him, according to a blog post by the City of Madison Fire Department. “It’s all I’ve ever wanted to do,” Davis said.

Appleton fire department updates fallen hero display

Fallen heroes from the Fox Valley are being honored in a special way. On Thursday, the Appleton Fire Department announced that they have updated their line-of-duty death display, located at Fire Station #1. The display contains four plaques and a banner featuring members of the department who have passed while in the line of duty.

VIDEO: Los Angeles metro bus fully engulfed in flames on Freeway

A Metro bus caught fire on the 10 Freeway near Boyle Heights Thursday afternoon. Crews have responded to a call of a vehicle fire on the 10 Freeway at North State Street a little before 2 p.m. SkyFOX was over the scene as the Metro Silver Line bus was fully engulfed in flames. It is unknown if there were people inside the bus when the vehicle caught fire.

FDNY inclusion training helps trans community feel respected, protected

The FDNY has been making all the difference in how EMTs and other frontline workers respond to calls. The goal of the department’s diversity training is to make the transgender community feel more comfortable calling 911. The transgender sensitivity training is taught by firefighter Brooke Guinan, who knows what it is like to be on the other side of the uniform, needing the help of emergency services while battling depression.

Connecticut firefighters rescue ‘Justin Beaver’ trapped in water

PHOTOS: Firefighters have freed a trapped beaver and perhaps bestowed it with a pop music career. Firefighters rescued the critter last week and nicknamed it “Justin Beaver.” Ridgefield firefighters responded to an undisclosed residential property for a report of an animal trapped in water. Photos the firefighters posted on social media show the beaver was stuck in wires.

Firefighters concerned about possible change to Iowa's fireworks law

Local fire departments are expressing concerns about a bill now on the way to Gov. Kim Reynolds' desk. Currently, cities and counties in Iowa can decide where fireworks are sold. If the bill becomes law, fireworks stands would be allowed in commercial and industrial zones in every city and county in the state.

Two adults displaced after Green Bay house fire causes $70,000 in damages

A house fire in Green Bay Thursday afternoon displaced two adults and caused around $70,000 in damages. The Green Bay Metro Fire Department was dispatched to a structure fire at 1109 S. Taylor St. around 3:25 p.m. Upon arrival, firefighters found smoke coming from the second-floor windows and roof. According to the fire department, firefighters brought the fire under control within 30 minutes.

Madison mental health response program now citywide

A pilot program in Madison that sends mental health workers to respond to crisis situations instead of police is now providing service to the whole city. The Community Alternative Response for Emergency Services program, or CARES, began in September and has responded to more than 250 calls. The program pairs mental health workers from Journey Mental Health with paramedics.

Area leaders say Western Lakes Fire District budget increase has community support

Local elected officials say they’ve heard positive feedback from constituents regarding the Western Lakes Fire District’s recent report detailing staffing issues and the reported need for more than $6 million in WLFD’s annual budget. The district has said it cannot currently afford to increase staff or pay enough to retain workers, even as calls for service increased 74% from 2017 to 2021 as the district’s development and population have grown.

FDNY dealt with water pressure issues during massive Queens fire, 2 firefighters injured
