VIDEO: The dangers of firefighting are very real, and that means dozens of hours of training every year.
On Wednesday, Superior firefighters got an opportunity to get the best type of training possible by using an abandoned building.
Superior fire officials said these opportunities don’t open up often, but when they do, they reschedule whatever they are doing to get firefighters together to really hone their search and rescue skills — while building a stronger bond under tough circumstances.

A piece of Woodward’s history burned to the ground Thursday morning.
The old States Hotel/Collins Clinic on 10th and Main was destroyed by the fire that broke out at 6:45 a.m. on Thursday, according to people working in the area at the time and called 9-1-1.
There was a fire on the second floor of the same building late Wednesday night that firefighters put out and were on the scene for a while afterwards.

Federal regulators are warning railroads that the long trains they favor can cause all kinds of problems and contribute to derailments, so they want the railroads to ensure their training and operating procedures account for that.
The Federal Railroad Administration stopped short of recommending in its latest safety advisory issued Thursday that railroads limit the size of their trains, which can routinely stretch more than 2 miles long.

The Village of Kronenwetter Fire Department will celebrate its newest acquisition with a traditional “push-in” ceremony on Monday, May 1 at 7 p.m. at the Kronenwetter Fire Department at 1582 Kronenwetter Dr.
Ladder Truck 1 joined the Kronenwetter fleet back in January. The $1.3 million purchase was approved by the Village Board last year using $400 thousand in American Relief Plan Act funds and $200 thousand from the equipment fund.

VIDEO: A flat tire sparked a fire that engulfed a moving minivan in Wisconsin on Tuesday night and left a trail of flames as officers raced to pull the driver to safety, authorities said.
Officers spotted the minivan just after 9 p.m. driving with a flat tire, the Kenosha Police Department said. After seeing sparks flying from the tire, officers tried to pull the vehicle over.

The Gloucester Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad (GVFRS) says crews responded to a large fire in an effort that spanned three hours.
Personnel responded to the working structure fire at 11:12 p.m. on Wednesday, April 26. The scene was located off Lord Carrington Drive.
When crews arrived, they found heavy flames on the second floor and attic area.

The FDNY on Wednesday announced a new effort to prevent fires caused by lithium-ion batteries.
The department received a $100,000 donation from Grubhub, DoorDash and Uber.
The FDNY says it will use the money to help promote fire safety outreach and support the public education campaign to prevent fires caused by e-bike batteries.

A 13-year-old is facing charges for allegedly attacking two Gastonia firefighters Tuesday night, police said.
The Gastonia Police Department responded to the reported assault of a firefighter around 9 p.m. on Pikes Peak Drive. Gastonia fire officials said one of their firefighters was attacked by a teen who was armed with a knife.

The Pine Lake Fire Department said a dog and a woman are safe following an ice rescue north of Rhinelander on Tuesday afternoon.
Crews responded to Mohawk Shores Road around 3:30 p.m. for the report of a dog that had broken through the ice. When crews arrived they found a woman who was attempting to rescue a dog also in the water.

Participation is voluntary, but a five-year study released a decade ago found firefighters had a 9% higher rate of cancer and 14% higher rate of cancer-related deaths compared to the general population.

Newly released video shows the moment an 18-wheeler crashed into the back of a firetruck already on the scene of another crash in Smith County.
The incident happened April 5, 2023, along Interstate 20 in Smith County. Thankfully, no first responders were seriously injured. Smith County ESD 2 Fire Chief Eric Greaser credits a blocking device on the back of the firetruck for the outcome.

New Jersey is a hot spot for this fungus and health officials are renewing warnings because it's resistant to treatment.
