PHOTOS: The eyes of the nation were on the Las Vegas valley, specifically Henderson, 35 years ago when a series of explosions at an industrial plant rocked the valley killing two people, leaving hundreds injured, causing more than $100 million in damage and impacting the NASA space shuttle program. In a 2018 interview with 8 News Now, retired Henderson Fire Captain Don Griffie was in one of the first engines heading to the reported fire at Pacific Engineering and Production Company of Nevada, referred to as PEPCON, when the first explosion happened.

Mandatory retirement age eliminated for Iowa volunteer firefighters, reserve police officers

Iowa no longer has a mandatory retirement age for reserve police officers and volunteer firefighters. Full and part-time police and firefighters in Iowa must retire at the age of 65. The governor has signed a bill into law that eliminates that age restriction for volunteer firefighters and trained reserve police officers who are volunteers, but can make arrests and investigate crimes.

Historic firehouse in Michigan returns to use for firefighters for three days

VIDEO: Firefighters in Ypsilanti are making a brief move back into their old firehouse that's since become a museum to celebrate the historic building and city's 200th birthday. The Michigan Firehouse Museum is opening doors up again for firefighters for a limited time. Originally built in 1898, the Ypsilanti Firehouse was closed and later revitalized as a museum.

'They’re superheroes': Hoan Bridge at Milwaukee's lakefront glows red to honor fallen Wisconsin firefighters

A special tribute Sunday at Milwaukee's lakefront. The bridge was illuminated in red as a way to remember three Wisconsin firefighters that were killed in the line of duty in 2022. Earlier Sunday night, Milwaukee Fire Chief Aaron Lipski, along with other local and state fire chiefs, held a ceremony for the fallen firefighters.

VIDEO: Fire reignites at Shell Chemical Plant in Texas

A fire reignited at the Shell Deer Park Chemical Plant, several hours after it was extinguished on Saturday. According to the Deer Park Office of Emergency Management, the fire has rekindled and firefighters are back putting it out. The fire was still burning on Sunday. The city of Deer Park said officials have gone over their wastewater storage capacity because they are using a large amount of water on the fire.

La Crosse Water Rescue Team getting some swift river practice

VIDEOS: Massive fire engulfs industrial building in California

A massive three-alarm fire engulfed an industrial warehouse in Commerce Friday, sending thick smoke into the air and destroying what is believed to be a plastic manufacturing plant. The blaze erupted at about 3:40 a.m. in the 6500 block of Flotilla Street west of Davie Avenue. Los Angeles County Fire Department crews encountered flames leaping into the air, creating a massive plume of black smoke that could be seen for miles.

Kentucky fire department first in state to offer special cancer screening test

The Georgetown Fire Department is now the first in Kentucky to offer a specific type of cancer screening test to its firefighters. It’s called the Galleri test and it can detect more than 50 types of cancer, even in the earliest stages. “We always want to try to figure out ways that we can take care of our members,” said Chief Tim Thompson, Georgetown Fire Department.

Time and money needed to replace South Dakota fire department equipment after fire destroys nearly everything

While the Lake Norden fire department has received offers of help after a Wednesday morning fire destroyed much of its equipment, the long-term replacement will take time and money. Grafton and Saukville fire departments commit to shared service exploration

An open house is being planned to gather community input on merging the Grafton and Saukville fire departments. While discussions at one time focused on a possible four-way merger among Grafton, Saukville, Cedarburg and Port Washington, the plan has since narrowed to the two central villages. Wisconsin firefighters killed in line of duty to be honored

Three firefighters with Wisconsin ties who died in the line of duty last year will be honored this weekend as part of the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend. Two longtime Mineral Point firefighters, 43-year-old Captain Brian Busch and 69-year-old James Ludlum are among the 144 firefighters from around the country who will be recognized for their service during this weekend's event.
