Sandy Springs is changing the inspection process for apartment communities.
A new code of ordinances is requiring apartment complexes to hire a third party to inspect units annually. Before updating regulations, only 20% of apartment units were required to be inspected each year.
The new policy will help the city better address water and structural damage, mold, fire hazards and other issues — particularly in older complexes that don’t have sprinkler systems for apartment fires, a statement said.

A fire late Saturday afternoon at an Onalaska apartment building leaves some residents without a place to stay.
The Onalaska Fire Department was sent to 1308 Wilson Street around 5:38 p.m. for reports of smoke both inside and outside the building.
People in the building were evacuating when fire crews arrived.

VIDEO: The Pulaski fire chief confirms a fire that destroyed two downtown businesses and several apartments was caused by a tree falling on a power line.
Pulaski Tri-County Fire Chief James Styczynski says a crew was cutting down the tree when it fell on the wires, sparking the fire.
At least 20 departments responded to the fire, including Pulaski, Green Bay, Howard, Seymour, and Suamico.
