PHOTOS: The Weyauwega Fire Department ignited small fires inside of a derelict farmhouse Saturday, Oct. 7, at the crossroads of Kriese and Haffner Roads. Throughout the morning they tested their firefighting skills in a live-fire setting with full gear and hoses at the ready. When they were done, they burned the house down for good.

A few seconds could be the difference between a safe escape or a tragedy during a fire, and fire prevention week is one step to ensure that people are educated about fire safety. A gas balloon involved in an international race burst into flames Monday evening after crashing into a power line structure in Kaufman County. Kaufman County officials said the balloon came down off U.S. Highway 175, near Crandall, just after 7:15 p.m. It first crashed into high-powered transmission lines and then distribution lines before catching fire, said Kaufman County emergency manager Steve Howie.

The Milwaukee Fire Department responded to two overnight fires within 30 minutes of each other. At 2:30 a.m., the fire department responded to a minor electrical fire at the Hilton Garden Inn near Howell Avenue and College Avenue. The hotel was evacuated, and no one was injured. Then, at 3 a.m., they responded to 34th Street and Highland Avenue for a garage fire.

VIDEO: A dive team searched under Milwaukee's Hoan Bridge – but nothing was found – after officials say someone reported a potentially endangered child Saturday, Oct. 7.
