Madison Chief: Southeast side fire station pushed back additional 2 years

VIDEO: Madison fire Chief Steve Davis said Monday the latest capital budget from Mayor Paul Soglin would push back construction of a fire station on the city's far southeast side from 2018 to 2020. Neighborhoods south of the Beltline near the McFarland city limits have some of the longest fire and EMS response times in the city.

Milwaukee firefighters battle fire in vacant house near 53rd &Custer

Milwaukee fire crews are investigating the cause of a fire in a vacant house near 53rd and Custer on Monday morning, September 19th. Officials say the fire caused about $260,000 in damage to the building and its contents. There apparently had been several renovations and some remodeling done at the home in the last few years.

No survivors in Northern Door plane crash

Authorities say there were no survivors after a small plane crashed in Peninsula State Park on Sunday night. The plane was found off Highland Road, north of the golf course maintenance building, just before 10 p.m. after more than an hour of intense searching by northern Door County police and fire personnel.

Appleton firefighters douse blaze set by juveniles

Firefighters quickly extinguished a fire on Sunday in a vacant apartment that juveniles fled prior to their arrival. The Appleton Fire Department, along with crews from the Grand Chute Fire Department, were called about 2 p.m. to 2707 W. Fourth St. Grand Chute firefighters found the blaze in the basement and put it out with a water extinguisher.

Benefit for paralyzed former Appleton firefighter 'awesome'

Friends and family showed up in force at the Best Western Bridgewood Resort Hotel to show their support for Reese, who was paralyzed in a 2001 diving accident.

New Jersey firefighter dies after training

A firefighter has died after a training event Thursday, officials have confirmed. Fire Marshal Chris Barkalow said Friday that Chief Engineer Daniel McCann III of Wall "fell ill after training last night while at home and was unable to be revived." McCann was a 27-year veteran who served with Manasquan Hook & Ladder Company 1.

NY, NJ bombings: Suspect in custody after shootout with police, sources say

Ahmad Khan Rahami, the man suspected in bombings in New York and New Jersey, is now in custody after a shootout with police, sources said. The shootout happened Monday in Linden, New Jersey, a local and federal law enforcement official said. Rahami was taken to an ambulance in a stretcher with his right shoulder bloodied and bandaged.

Report: Florida firefighters union 'saved up' complaints against chiefs

A report released Thursday calls into question complaints lodged against Ocean City-Wright Fire Chief Billy Lord and Deputy Chief Scott Funchess. It states there is evidence that firefighter union members “saved up” allegations “in order to present a more damaging case,” against the two men. The complaints were at the root of the fire district’s commissioners’ decision Wednesday to suspend Lord for 45 days without pay and suspend Funchess for 30 days without pay.

California columnist: Firefighters’ cushy work schedules get even easier

Several years ago I wrote a column entitled, “Why I want to be a firefighter.” The reasons were obvious – good pay and health and dental benefits, time-and-a-half for overtime, lots of vacation days and holidays — and the perk of sleeping on the job. Retirement pay includes lifetime health insurance for the firefighter and spouse and almost equals the working salary.

NFPA receives Assistance to Firefighters Grant for new National Fire Data System

The goal of NFDS is to address the priority needs of the U.S. fire service and generate quality local and national data for both operational and community risk reduction decision-making.

Wausau Battle Of The Badges Honors Fallen Hero

VIDEO: The third annual Battle of the Badges softball tournament was held at Sunnyvale Park in Wausau on Saturday. Local police and fire departments battled it out to see who was king of the diamond. "Everybody is here to have fun but obviously there is a little competition involved," said Organizer Ted Knoeck.

Study group weighs 911, dispatch options for Monona

Monona firefighters would join the city’s EMS personnel in being dispatched by Dane County if the Monona City Council agrees with a recommendation from a group charged with studying the emergency dispatch operations. The study looked at the entire 911 system, which included considerations of technical needs, service, staffing, security, responsiveness and cost.
