Connecticut fire union files 2nd complaint against city emergency management official

After being turned down by the city twice, the fire union is asking the state labor board to approve its request to place city Deputy Director of Emergency Management Rick Fontana on interim relief from any fire-related duties until a decision is made on the union’s complaint against Fontana. The complaint, which was filed with the State Board of Labor Relations in August, claimed Fontana did the work of the fire employees several times by allegedly dispatching himself and responding to fire calls, working to put out fires, using fire radio channels, wearing a similar uniform as fire command staff, and acting as the public information officer on fire scenes.

Oklahoma police arrest man accused of attacking firefighter at scene of house fire

Police arrested a man accused of attacking a firefighter with a flashlight while trying to enter a burning home where drugs were reportedly found Monday night. Officers received a call to assist the Tulsa Fire Department with a house fire in the 2500 block of North Kingston Avenue around 11:25 p.m. after a firefighter had been assaulted.

Waukesha County bus yard fire ruled arson

VIDEO: The fire that destroyed a school bus barn and dozens of buses near Waukesha is now considered arson. Agents with the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives joined in the investigation Monday. Sources say the damage will be in the millions of dollars. Cell phone video shows explosions from Sunday's fire at the Dousman Transport school bus yard.

Lafayette salvage and recycling business a total loss after weekend fire

A machine shop in the town of Lafayette was declared a total loss by a fire official after a Saturday morning fire. The shop at 16978 40th Ave. is owned by Jeff Lyberg, and is part of a salvage and recycling business, according to the Chippewa Fire District, which responded to the fire at 7:50 a.m. The fire was visible from County Highway P and 30th Avenue in the Village of Lake Hallie and was spotted by a Fire District ambulance returning from an assignment.

Fire destroys dozens of school buses at Waukesha County lot

PHOTO: A massive fire has destroyed dozens of buses at a school bus transportation company in Waukesha County. The Waukesha County Sheriff's Office says more than 30 school buses and a bus barn were destroyed in Sunday's fire at a terminal of Dousman Transport in Hartland. Hartland Fire Division Chief Dave Jambretz says he is not aware of any injuries.

Lucky Kitten Rescued From Sheboygan Sewer

VIDEO: A very lucky kitten is safe after Sheboygan fire fighters pulled it from a sewer last night. Dispatch got a call from a resident around 7:45 pm Sunday night about meowing coming from a storm drain on 30th Street and North Avenue. Fire fighters from Station 4 responded to the call, and popped off the grate to have a look.

New York City program sends unarmed firefighters and EMTs into ‘active shooter’ situations

The city has launched a controversial program to use firefighters and EMTs to help rescue critically injured victims in “active shooter” incidents, The Post has learned. New York’s Bravest and FDNY paramedics are being trained to accompany special NYPD officers into buildings or other places where a gunman or terrorist is killing people and help bring the wounded to safety.

Connecticut fire departments’ feud complicates effort to improve city insurance rating

An ongoing rift between the city’s paid fire department and the five volunteer departments flared again recently in a dispute over how to handle an appeal of the insurance rating of the city's fire protection services that could affect insurance rates of properties. Norwich Fire Chief Kenneth Scandariato launched an appeal to improve the city’s rating issued in a 2013 assessment report.

Minneapolis-St. Paul fire departments try to clean up culture of dirty gear

It was a badge of honor, dirty gear. Smoke-scarred protective suits carried a message, St. Paul Fire Marshal Steve Zaccard said: “You fought fires.” St. Paul Fire Department staff scrubbed gear and protective clothing after a house fire Tuesday, part of an effort to reduce their risk of cancer. “It exudes confidence and experience and competence,” he said.

It's been a very bad week with the suicide of at least two Firefighters, the Line of Duty deaths of Wilmington Firefighters Lt. Christopher Leach, Firefighter Jerry Fickes and FDNY Deputy Fire Chief Michael Fahy. Our continued condolences to all those suffering due to these horrible losses. Among so many factors at any working fire are the folks who know about the incidents coming in well before we do-the dispatchers.

Marijuana labs spawn lethal explosions across the country

A New York fire battalion chief died responding to the blast Tuesday in a Bronx home that authorities say had been converted into an indoor marijuana farm.

Memorial service honors fallen firefighters in Eau Claire

Sunday, a memorial service was held at Florian Gardens in Eau Claire, and across the nation, for those that unfortunately were unable to make it home safely from the job.
