A North Las Vegas Fire Department captain hailed as a hero for rescuing a baby died Wednesday night from a medical episode after returning home from fighting a three-alarm fire, officials said. The death of 43-year-old Yaphet Miller, a 22-year veteran of the department, was determined to be work-related because his last shift was spent fighting the blaze, officials said.

Interim D.C. Police Chief Peter Newsham says miscommunication led to a delayed police response, as a District firefighter and paramedic struggled with a woman who attacked them with a knife.
“The fire department clearly needed some assistance, and that information wasn’t clearly communicated to the (police) officer in the field,” said Newsham, in a WTOP interview.

The city is handcuffing efforts to negotiate pay raises for police because of an outdated city charter provision that requires wage parity with firefighters, according to a lawsuit filed by the officers’ union Wednesday in St. Louis Circuit Court. The St. Louis Police Officers Association, which represents the majority of the officers, asks that a judge declare invalid a part of the charter requiring that officers and firefighters earn comparable wages.

VIDEO: A new ordinance in Germantown is aimed at saving firefighter lives. The new rules require buildings with lightweight roofs and floors, which are more prone to collapse, to post signs. It’s a requirement for commercial, industrial and three or more unit buildings. “I am confident that this, these markings, is gonna save firefighter lives,” said Germantown Fire Chief Gary Weiss.

Firefighters from as far north as Sturgeon Bay and as far south as Mishicot were on the scene of a barn fire at Ebert Enterprises, a large farm near Algoma, on Thursday afternoon. VIDEO: Firefighters spent a few hours battling a fire at a downtown Evansville business late Wednesday night into Thursday morning. The Evansville Fire Department was called to Night Owl Food and Spirits around 10:00 p.m. They needed help from more than a dozen other agencies. The Modesto City Council on Tuesday turned down a $1.08 million grant that would have paid for a dozen firefighters to become paramedics after an emotional roller coaster of a discussion that lasted more than 2-1/2 hours.
Council members Kristi Ah You and Tony Madrigal cast the only “yes” votes to accept the Federal Emergency Management Agency grant, while the five other council members voted “no.

City officials scrapped plans to raise the roof of the downtown Lebanon fire station to make room for its new $870,000 ladder truck.
Lebanon bought the truck, but it doesn’t fit in either of its fire stations.
The lone bid to raise the roof and renovate the downtown station came in at $680,000, more than double the projected $250,000.

Today, six former Oswego firefighters suited up for duty for the first time with the Syracuse Fire Department.
It was a fortunate turn of events for six men whose positions were axed in Oswego, and for the SFD, which lost an unusually high number of recruits in its most recent class.
