Merrill Fire Department gets DNR grant for wildland firefighting

VIDEO: The Merrill Fire Department does more than just battle structure fires within city limits. It covers 141 square miles in southern Lincoln County. In the spring, the department helps control forest or wildland fires about every day or every other day. But it needs better tools to help do that job.

Injured first responder property tax relief proposed in Florida

Stevens Point firefighters fundraise for kids' winter coats

Stevens Point firefighters are doubling their fundraising efforts this year to provide new winter coats to local kids in need. The Stevens Point Firefighters Union partnered for the first time last year with Operation Warm, a national organization that provides students with brand new winter coats made in the United States.

No serious injuries after Shreveport ladder truck rolls on highway

PHOTO - Two Shreveport firefighters were taken to the hospital with minor injuries early Monday afternoon after their fire truck rolled over on Kings Hwy. It happened just after 12 p.m. near Linwood Ave. It was not immediately clear what caused the ladder truck to wind up on its side, but Shreveport Fire Chief Scott Wolverton said they were responding to an EMS call when it happened.

Kansas court: Fourth Amendment violated by firefighter's search

The Kansas Court of Appeals has ruled an area woman cannot be prosecuted for drugs found during a warrantless search of her purse by a Shawnee Heights firefighter. Lt. Brian Dodds responded to a home east of Topeka on Sept. 19, 2014, after the homeowner complained a woman she didn’t know was showering in her basement.

$37K later, taxpayer-funded study of Rhode Island fire dept. nowhere to be found

Ten months after hiring an outside consultant to review staffing in the city’s fire department, the Providence City Council is refusing to release the much-anticipated findings from the report. Records reviewed by Eyewitness News show Massachusetts-based MMA Consulting Group was paid $37,600 on June 22, but the report remains in “draft form,” according to the city’s law department.

Follow Up: Family describes Florida firefighter's battle with PTSD before death

The veteran firefighter who committed suicide Saturday aggressively fought post-traumatic stress disorder for years, his father said. Indian River County Fire Rescue Battalion Chief David Dangerfield, 48, drove to a rural area of the county and shot himself, the Sheriff's Office said. Before his death, he made a Facebook post about the perils of PTSD for firefighters and advised family and friends of firefighters to assist their loved ones with getting help.

Fire at Oconomowoc townhome results in significant smoke, water damage

A townhome in the 500 block of Sutherland Court was the scene of a structure fire in the early morning hours of Oct. 16. Strong lightning and thunder traveled through the area before the 2 a.m. call to Oconomowoc Fire Department. The resident told dispatch that she heard “a loud bang followed by the smell of smoke and the smoke alarms sounding,” according to a news release from the fire department.

Weyauwega area firefighters train for safety

The Weyauwega Area Fire District recently held training on grain-rescue safety for volunteer firefighters at CHS Larsen Cooperative in Weyauwega, Wisconsin. Harvest is well underway and farmers will soon be filling grain bins. Working in grain bins can be a dangerous activity. Thus it's important to be prepared for any unforeseen emergencies during harvest and tp have the proper training and equipment.

University of Connecticut student killed by university fire vehicle

A University of Connecticut student was hit and killed by a university fire vehicle on the Storrs campus, early Sunday morning. Colorado firefighter in long battle back from injuries

It was supposed to be a routine training session for Tom Albert, who has been fighting fires for 25 years. Albert and other members of Boulder Fire Rescue were near the area of 17th Street and King Avenue on June 13 to do some wildland fire training. Baltimore County fills 911 center vacancies with cops, firefighters, paramedics

Baltimore County officials say they are using firefighters, paramedics and police officers to temporarily fill staffing gaps at its 911 center. Eight employees from other departments were transferred to the 911 center in September and will be working there until March, county spokeswoman Ellen Kobler said.
