Ohio town using decontamination kits for firefighters on scene to fight cancer risk

The team in Colerain Township was taking a proactive approach they said after a study still ongoing by the National Institute of Safety and Health, or NIOSH as it's known, found when fires burn it's a health hazard to firefighters, in a big way. People know the danger as fire destroys a burning building.

Early morning fire destroys garage, SUV in South Milwaukee

Firefighters on Wednesday morning, September 28th were called out to the scene of a garage fire near 12th and Michigan in South Milwaukee. The call came in shortly before 1:00 a.m. When crews arrived on scene, they encountered a fully-involved detached garage. Officials say the fire extended to an SUV parked adjacent to the garage and to the roof of an auto body shop located directly to the east.

Burlington fire departments hope to purchase new training facility

The Town of Burlington Fire Department and City of Burlington Fire Department are raising money to invest in a proposed emergency training facility for the west end of the county. A new training facility would allow the department to train in various fire scenarios, EMS situations, hazmat training, and specialized training such as high-angle rope scenarios.

Town of Center Fire Department awarded CHS Safety Grant

On Friday, September 23, 2016 CHS Larsen Cooperative employees Jeremy Hunt, Andy VanDyck and Mary Kay Cleven awarded a CHS Safety grant for $1,825 to the Town of Center Fire Department Joe Hofacker, Fire Chief and Matt Harrison. The fire department plans to use these funds to purchase a multi gas monitor.

Ousted Los Angeles fire marshal claims corruption among city fire inspectors

A top Los Angeles Fire Department official is alleging corruption in the city inspection programs he once administered as part of a $5-million retaliation claim filed Tuesday. Deputy Chief John Vidovich was removed from his post as fire marshal last month after a two-year tenure that was marred by disclosures about delinquent inspections and mounting criticism from the firefighters' labor union.

Arrest made in connection with blast that killed FDNY battalion chief

Authorities arrested the man who was living inside the Bronx drug house that exploded Tuesday morning, killing an FDNY battalion chief and injuring 20 others, law enforcement sources said. Julio Salcedo was arrested in Cliffside Park, New Jersey, by the Regional Fugitive Task Force made up of NYPD detectives and US Marshals.

New Orleans fire union, administration at odds over promotions and pay

Firefighters union officials and top brass at the New Orleans Fire Department are at odds over some recent promotions and pay raises. The latest dust-up between union President Nick Felton and Fire Superintendent Tim McConnell came Monday during a meeting of the Civil Service Commission. At the meeting, Felton criticized the department over the way it handled the promotion of 40 firefighters to the rank of captain, as well as the distribution of extra pay to NOFD employees who are not emergency responders.

New Hampshire fire chief beats cancer, returns to work full time

Corey Landry, Durham's fire chief, is once again fighting fires after beating back stage 4 lymphoma. Landry, 47, answered his first call about a month ago, responding to an apartment fire in Berwick, Maine, that displaced up to 20 people. He's also returned to the gridiron as a referee, and this Friday he'll be calling the Dartmouth-Penn football game in Hanover.

Minneapolis fire captain files sexual harassment, retaliation suit

A Minneapolis fire captain has filed a lawsuit accusing the city’s fire department of failing to protect her from a commander who allegedly sexually harassed her. Vicki Jung, who was among the first female firefighters in the city when she joined the department in 1994, charged that she faced retaliation after she reported the harassment, according to a lawsuit filed earlier this month in Hennepin County District Court.

Rock County fire internship benefits students and fire departments

VIDEO: An internship program in Rock County is helping fire departments better serve the community while also teaching students what it’s like to be a firefighter. The internship program started about three years ago in Edgerton. Since then, it has expanded to other fire departments in Rock County. Now, the program is offered in Edgerton, the Town of Beloit, Milton, Orfordville and Clinton.

FDNY battalion chief killed when marijuana grow house explodes

An FDNY battalion chief was killed and several others — including six police officers and nine other firefighters — were injured when a marijuana-growing operation inside a Bronx house exploded early Tuesday, officials and sources said. Michael Fahy of Battalion 19, a 17-year member of the FDNY, was struck in the head by part of the roof that blew off the private home at 300 W.

2 taken to the hospital, including 18-year-old extricated from basement after fire in West Bend

Two people had to be taken to the hospital after a man reported an explosion and subsequent fire at a home in West Bend Monday morning, September 26th. Firefighters responded to the home on Eagle Lane around 8:15 a.m. after the Washington County Sheriff's Office was notified of the fire by a 911 caller, reporting an 18-year-old family member was trapped in the basement.

FDNY battalion chief killed when drug lab explodes in the Bronx

An FDNY captain was killed and several others were injured when a drug lab inside a Bronx house exploded early Tuesday, officials and sources said. Suburban St. Louis firefighter found unresponsive at station dies

The West County EMS and Fire Protection District is mourning the loss of one of their own. Sean McMullin was found unresponsive at Station 2, located at 13790 Manchester Road, around 12:50 p.m. Saturday. After being found, paramedics attempted lifesaving efforts, but were unsuccessful, officials said.

Judge's order reinstates terminated Oklahoma fire captain

A judge’s order has reinstated an Enid Fire Department fire captain who was terminated following an October 2015 incident involving a laser allegedly pointed at an airplane. “The court found that the evidence did not support him doing anything inappropriate, and, therefore, there was no basis to terminate his employment,” Mark Hammons, attorney for Fire Capt.
