The names of 24 FDNY firefighters killed by cancer linked to their work at Ground Zero on Sept. 11 will be added to the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial next month.
They will be among the 112 firefighters honored Oct. 9 at the 35th annual memorial service at the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, MD.

Houston can't overhaul a state-governed firefighter pension system that the mayor claims is pushing the city towards insolvency, a Texas appeals court ruled.
Houston sued the Houston Firefighters' Relief and Retirement Fund in January 2014, seeking a declaration that a state law setting how the fund is operated, and giving the city no control over the amount of its contributions, is unconstitutional.

Investigators are still searching for what caused a Fitchburg home to explode last month. Thursday marks three weeks since the explosion that rocked the neighborhood. Debris once filled the streets and yards of homes around the area, but the restoration process for residents is just beginning. Crews from multiple fire departments were battling a large fire Monday in Richfield, according to Hewitt Area Fire Chief Brian Hafermann. The fire was an empty house in the 7700 block of Bethel Road, Wood County Sheriff's Department Capt. Shawn Becker said. Although the cause of the fire remains under investigation, a person had taken out a permit to burn brush in an area near the house, Becker said.

VIDEO: Manitowoc fire crews were called to the scene of a garage fire in the 700 block of N. 5th St. in Manitowoc just before 2 o'clock Monday morning. Firefighters on Monday morning, September 12th were called out to the scene of a structure fire near Brown Deer Road and Servite Drive in Milwaukee. The call came in around 3:20 a.m. Officials say the fire broke out in the warehouse area of a one-story strip mall. It was contained by two sprinklers. The fire caused $48,600 in damage to the building.

Nine people died Monday morning in a South Memphis house blaze that fire officials called the city’s deadliest fire in almost a century.
Memphis Fire Director Gina Sweat confirmed the deaths during a 9 a.m. press conference. She said one child pulled from the residence was still fighting for his life at LeBonheur Children’s Medical Center.

Seven children were among 11 people who died in a house fire in South Memphis Monday morning, family and friends said.
The children who died were Angel, 16; Cameron, either 8 or 10; Alonzo Ward, 6; Diamond; Precious Rose, 3; Kira; and Ernest Jr. Ages were unknown for Diamond, Kira and Ernest Jr.
The adults were identified as Carol Collier, 56; Lakeisha Ward, 27, mother of Alonzo Ward; and Eloise Futrell, 61.
