Ohio firefighter hit by vehicle during ‘Fill the Boot’ campaign

A Columbus firefighter was taken to the hospital after being hit by a vehicle while participating in a “Fill the Boot” event. According to the Columbus Division of Fire, the firefighter suffered a broken leg after being hit by a vehicle at High Street and North Broadway while standing in the road participating in the “Fill the Boot” campaign.

Virginia firefighters fear proposed cuts could cost lives

Firefighters are pushing back against the possible closure of one of Petersburg’s four fire stations, calling it a threat to public safety that eventually will cost lives. “The impact of staffing reduction and a proposed station closure would reduce the department of the firefighting force by approximately 25 percent,” said Andrew Pantelis, district vice president of the International Association of Fire Fighters, during a news conference Thursday in Petersburg.

Study: Peers, Public Perception Influence Firefighters Against Safety Equipment

Analysis by a team from Drexel University found that firefighters may shun safety gear due to the pressure of living up to their risk-taker image. Jennifer Taylor, PhD, associate professor in Drexel’s Dornsife School of Public Health, and her team used data from 123 firefighters interviews across the country to determine why they often refrain from using personal protective equipment (PPE) in dangerous situations.

Central New York fire department wearing bullet proof vests on calls

It's been almost four years since first responders to a fire in Webster, outside Rochester were ambushed as they arrived to help. Four firefighters were shot and two of them killed. Since then, we've seen attacks on other first responders including police officers in cities all over the country. Now, one fire department in Central New York is taking new action by wearing bullet proof vests capable of stopping a high powered rifle.

Colorado fire chief terminated after reports he stole $120,000 from previous job

The board of the Greater Eagle Fire Protection District terminated its jailed Chief Kurt Vogel on Thursday. Vogel was arrested last month on charges he stole more than $120,000 from his former fire department in Sterling. Vogel, who was hired by the Eagle district in April, was placed on unpaid leave following his Aug.

FEMA releases Assistance to Firefighters Grant application dates

The U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency announced that the 2016 Assistance to Firefighters Grant application period will open Tuesday, Oct. 11. Since 2001, AFG has funded firefighter and other first-responder equipment, protective gear, emergency vehicles, training and other resources needed to protect the public and emergency personnel from fire and related hazards.

Fire destroys Gilman bowling alley & restaurant

VIDEO: A popular Gilman business went up in flames Thursday afternoon. Pirate's Cove, which was formerly known as the Gilman Bowl, caught fire just after 1:30 PM Thursday. Witnesses say it appeared as though the fire started in the basement and quickly spread throughout the building. Firefighters from Gilman and six nearby towns fought the flames all afternoon, but the business appears to be a total loss.

Big Rig Slams Into Philadelphia Ladder Truck on Interstate

A big rig slammed into a firetruck bringing traffic on Interstate 95 to a screeching halt for hours early Thursday and leaving five Philadelphia firefighters hurt. Dismissed Texas fire cadets break their silence, ask for jobs back

Clergy goes after Connecticut fire union over ‘fearful tactics’ against emergency plan

Members of the Greater New Haven Clergy Association said they are “appalled” by the fire union’s use of “fearful tactics” in its efforts to stop a new city emergency plan. Update: Philadelphia firefighter died of natural causes, officials say

Philadelphia firefighter Gabriel Lee, who died during a night shift in North Philadelphia in July, succumbed to heart disease, the Medical Examiner's Office said Wednesday. Wayside volunteer firefighters put out shed fire

Nobody was hurt, but a shed is a total loss after catching fire this afternoon. The abandoned workshop caught fire just after 4 in the afternoon. Several nearby fire departments responded to the call for assistance at 7808 Dickinson Road in the town of Morrison. They were able to extinguish the blaze.

Milwaukee firefighters called out to conveyor belt fire at Veolia facility

Officials with the Milwaukee Fire Department on Wednesday afternoon, August 31st were called out to a fire at the Veolia facility on Jones Street near Lincoln Memorial Drive in Milwaukee. It happened around 3:00 p.m. Officials say the fire took place in an overheated conveyor belt motor, causing the conveyor belt to catch on fire.

Clintonville looks to tackle debt; Cuts rescue-pumper from budget
