Crews helped knocked down a residential fire in Janesville on Thursday afternoon.
The Janesville Fire Department responded to a report of a fire on the 1400 block of East Holmes Street shortly after 1:30 p.m.
According to a news release, crews found a small wood residence with flames in the back of the building which extended from a mulch pile and wooden privacy fence up to the second floor of the home.

After serving 30 years on the Southern Door Fire Department, Rich Olson has been chosen as the new fire chief after the interviewing process Wednesday evening. Olson, who served as a captain for the past 17 years, applied for the position after Gary Vandertie stepped down on February 1. Leading 45 volunteer firefighters, Olson says he is honored and proud to represent the men and women serving the Southern Door community.

A crash on the Beltline Thursday afternoon marked the 20th in May, a number law enforcement who patrols the area fears will continue to grow.
A number of factors, including construction as well as more people returning to a daily commute, are easy to explain. Some factors, however, aren’t.
“There was an obvious reduction in traffic enforcement during the pandemic because we reduced the number of discretionary contacts to try to reduce the spread of the pandemic,” said Dane County Deputy Sheriff Steven Mueller.

Over 5.1 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine have been administered across Wisconsin, according to the state Department of Health Services.
A total of 5,111,247 doses have been administered throughout the state since December, including 15,090 in the past day.
DHS officials said 47.4% of the state’s population has received at least one vaccine dose, which is 2,758,291 residents.

VIDEO: At least one firefighter was hurt in a crash involving a fire engine responding to a call along Girard Avenue in North Philadelphia on Thursday afternoon.
Police said firefighters and civilians were injured when Engine 29 crashed about three blocks from its Girard Avenue station. At least one firefighter could be seen getting removed from the rubble.

VIDEO: A huge fire broke out Thursday night at the site of the former "Just For Fun" roller rink in north suburban McHenry.
The roller rink at 914 N. Front Street closed last fall. The rink closed last fall after more than 70-years in business. It started out as a dance hall and was converted into a roller rink a few years later.

VIDEO: It's not the oldest fire station in the Buffalo Fire Department but it is one of the most spectacular. Firefighter James Rice says "It was built during Buffalo's industrial era. They were very proud of their fire service and fire departments."
The structure was built in 1897. In those days it was horses that pulled the engines.

As a veteran Allen firefighter and paramedic, Jason Denton knew the signs of a stroke. He just never expected to experience those symptoms himself. He and his physicians are bringing attention to the warning signs and lifesaving treatment for National Stroke Awareness Month.
In early March, after helping with a COVID-19 vaccine clinic in Allen, Denton called his brother as he was leaving.

During Memorial Day weekend the Gunflint Trail Historical Society unveiled a new exhibit at Chik-Wauk Museum & Nature Center near the end of the Gunflint Trail. The exhibit is called ‘Shifting Perspectives: Fire in the Wilderness.’
It features work and samples from the wildland fire research started in the 1970s by research Miron ‘Bud’ Heinselman to new research which identifies cultural fire sites using new dendrochronology technology for exact dating.

Simon Thao and Sakura Xiong will be the first Hmong-Americans to go through the Milwaukee Fire Academy and become city firefighters in the history of the Milwaukee Fire Department.
Thao graduated from Wauwatosa West High School, while Xiong is an alum of Milwaukee Riverside High School.

VIDEO: An off-duty Rochester firefighter came to the rescue during a recent boat fire – using an unconventional means to help extinguish it.
Rochester firefighters’ union IAFF107 says firefighter Oscar Herrera stepped in to help fight the fire on May 20 at Mayer’s Marina on Irondequoit Bay.
Video captured him using his jet ski to help get the fire under control.

Anyone having a heart attack at the nation’s busiest airport should be prepared to wait.
Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport’s average response time in 2020, from the 911 center receiving a medical call to the first unit reporting on scene, was 11 minutes and 48 seconds.
Even if a 911 operator at the airport knows CPR or has previous medical training, they are prohibited from giving life-saving instructions to 911 callers.

Dozens of people are displaced and five buildings were damaged Wednesday when a seven-alarm fire spread through a Dorchester neighborhood.
The fire was reported at about 11:15 a.m. on Fayston Street. From Sky 5, heavy, black smoke could be seen coming from at least three triple-deckers -- Nos. 86, 84 and 82 Fayston -- at the corner with Mascoma Street.

A spokesman from Verso Corporation said the cause of a fire Tuesday night at the Wisconsin Rapids mill appears to have been caused by lightning.
The company released a statement Wednesday afternoon saying around 7:30 p.m. lightning appeared to have struck the scrubber stack at the idled mill. “There were no employee injuries, and damage was limited to a non-operating area of the mill.

Firefighters on Wednesday, May 26 responded to the scene of a house in Racine. The call came in around 5:45 a.m.
Upon arrival, crews initiated a fast attack through the side door of the house knocking down the fire.
The fire was brought under control and loss was stopped in roughly one hour. The Racine Police Department assisted at the scene with traffic control.

The Wisconsin Rapids Fire Department said around 60 firefighters responded to the scene of a fire at VERSO Mill around 8 p.m. Tuesday night.
According to a news release, a hardwood digester caught fire. Wisconsin Rapids Deputy Fire Chief Todd Eckes said fire and heat compromised the stack causing a collapse, which then started subsequent fires in and around the digester tower.
