The La Crosse Fire Department will assume administration of the Holmen Area Fire Department for a year under a resolution the La Crosse Common Council approved Thursday night.
Council members Mark Neumann and Doug Happel characterized the approval, at a cost of $14,583.33 a month to the Holmen district, as one of the most important actions the council took Thursday, if not stretching back further.

As he arrived at Fire Station 13 in Tampa to spend 12 hours shadowing some of Tampa's firefighters, Luis Viera kept his reasoning simple: "I’m looking in this city’s budget for some robust and significant help for this fire station," he said.
The Tampa city councilman has been working for more than a year to ease the stress on the crews of Fire Station 13 – the city's busiest – a location plagued by nearly never-ending calls for service.

Two people were injured and arrested after a crash near 40th and North Thursday evening, July 8 involving a vehicle that was fleeing police.
According to police, the fleeing vehicle crashed into a house just before 6 p.m. after striking a parked vehicle.
There were people inside the house but none were hurt.

Firefighters responding to a house fire in the Town of Lakewood Thursday morning found a burn victim outside the home and a man dead inside.
The Oconto County Sheriff’s Office says the fire was reported on Big Bear Lane at 6:33 A.M. The house was engulfed when firefighters arrived. As they fought to put out the fire, firefighters rescued a 74-year-old woman who had suffered burns and found a 78-year-old man inside.

The three people who died in a house fire in northern Wisconsin have been identified as a mother and her two teenage daughters.
According to police, 36-year-old Jordan Chowning, 14-year-old Alyssa Chowning and 17-year-old Michelle Hathaway died Monday when fire swept through their home in Ashland.
One adult and two other children escaped the fire and a third adult who was away at the time returned to find the house ablaze.

Among those of a maze of motorists suddenly stopping on I-39/90 Tuesday as a chain reaction crash unfolded was Janesville's Paul Matchett.

The Superior Fire Department had its turn to practice on the old Manning Motel today after the Superior and Douglas County SWAT teams used it yesterday.
The crews began the first of three days training, as new and former firefighters practiced rescue scenarios.
Firefighters were eager to have a flat roof to train on, which they don’t encounter often.

Dash camera video captured someone throw a lit firework into a car stopped at a Midtown intersection on the night of July 4.
Kathy Kirby told News 2 that a car pulled up next to her son’s convertible, as he was stopped at a traffic light along Church Street at 17th Avenue North Sunday night. Someone in that car then tossed a “large, lit firework” into the convertible, which had the top down, striking her son in the back of the head, Kirby explained.

At the suggestion of Commissioner Michael Siers, the Nags Head Board of Commissioners during its July 7 meeting formed a task force to address fire safety issues in large oceanfront homes. The move comes several weeks after a two-alarm structure fire destroyed an 18-bedroom home on the oceanfront in Kill Devil Hills where more than 40 occupants had to be evacuated.

A man has been arrested after he reportedly taped a road flare to a propane tank, lit it and threw it at people outside a Boulder fire station.
Mark Stephen Szyperek, 58, was arrested Monday on suspicion of four counts of attempted first-degree assault with a deadly weapon, fourth-degree arson and possession of explosives.

A residential and RV fire on Madison’s north side caused more than $200,000 in damage early Wednesday morning.
Fire officials said crews were dispatched to the 1100 block of Shasta Drive around 12:20 a.m. for a report of a structure and RV fire. Neighbors called 911 after noticing an “orange glow” outside of their home.

Investigators with the Madison Fire Department say rags and painting materials that weren’t thrown away correctly are to blame for a garage fire on the city’s far east side Wednesday.
The fire department was called to Alton Drive near the Highway 30/I-90/94 interchange just after 1:30 p.m. Wednesday after a homeowner returned home to find alarms sounding and smoke coming from the front door.
