New leash on life: Why firefighting dogs are making a comeback

Most dogs know a trick or two, but in Santa Clarita, we found a Labrador named Echo, who has one that can bring even the toughest firefighters down to their knees every single time. “It’s one fell swoop,” said Echo’s handler, firefighter Jake Windell. “She’ll be standing on all fours and [all of a sudden] she’s just on her back, ready to go, and I think it’s hard for anybody not to smile when they see a dog on their back waiting for a belly rub.

Children's Museum of Green Bay introduces kids to local police and firefighters

The Children's Museum of Green Bay brought in members of the city of Green Bay's police and fire departments as part of their Superheroes Week project. “I don't really get to see police and fire trucks up close, and I also like police and fire trucks,” said Easton Banker.

Dog rescued from house fire on Madison’s north side

A dog is safe after a Wednesday morning house fire while no one was home, according to Madison fire officials. Neighbors of the home on Elka Lane called 911 just before 7:30 a.m., and crews were able to put the fire out in about 10 minutes. Nobody was in the house at the time, but firefighters were able to get a dog out of the house.

National Night Out brings back community with Beloit police and fire staff after year off

VIDEO: San Diego Police Department Says Tesla Torched By Arsonist

At least four fires were ignited near North Park overnight, according to San Diego police. The costliest of the fires, most of which were sparked between 1-2 a.m., involved a Tesla parked near Utah and Capps streets. In that fire, someone lit a car cover on fire, resulting in the destruction of the vehicle.

University of Florida Professor Is Creating Robotic Dogs Trained To Assist First Responders

Many pet owners teach their dogs how to sit, roll or shake hands, but rarely do they ever train their pets to guide firefighters out of a burning building. A group of doctoral students led by Eric Jing Du, a professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Florida, have trained and developed robotic dogs with the intent of helping first responders virtually see through walls in situations that they would otherwise be blindsided by.

Indiana firefighter receives headstone 82 years after his death

It was an honor that was years in the making on Tuesday for one special local hero. On Aug. 3, 1939, John Harris — who served in the latter part of the 19th Century as the first Black firefighter with the Kokomo Fire Department — died and was buried on a small plot of land at Crown Point Cemetery, just north of Carter Street.

1 evaluated for smoke inhalation after fire damages 2 Algoma homes

Officials say a fire in Algoma early Tuesday afternoon caused one person to be treated for smoke inhalation. According to Algoma Fire and Rescue, crews were called to a fire at Kirkland and Arlington Avenue in Algoma at about 1 p.m. Before crews arrived, officials say dispatch told them the fire had already spread to a neighboring building, and mutual aid was then requested from Kewaunee, Casco, Luxemburg and Southern Door fire departments.

Man charged with 8 counts of arson across Brown County, dates back to 2018

A man from Hobart is facing eight charges for separate arson incidents that date back to 2018, one of which gave his uncle a heart attack and later died. According to the criminal complaint, 24-year-old James Ambrosius is charged with eight counts of arson dating back to 2018. Originally, authorities were called to interview Ambrosius on July 27, 2021, as he was seen at a scene of a fire and admitted to being in the parking lot and using cocaine in a vehicle.

Car catches fire inside service center at Saukville dealership, one firefighter injured

31 Dallas firefighters quarantined due to COVID-19 as department navigates staffing, governor's mask order

With the COVID-19 Delta variant spreading and moving fast in Texas, first responders are once again getting infected. Dallas Fire-Rescue and the Dallas Fire Fighters Association reported Monday that 31 members of the department are now quarantined due to the virus. Per DFFA, 21 firefighters as of Monday have active cases, and 10 others have had recent exposure to the virus.

Westfield Man Injured in Fall at Blackhawk State Park

At approximately 4:10 p.m. on July 31, 2021, the Vernon County Emergency 911 Dispatch Center received a call of a man that had been removed from the river and CPR was being performed. Authorities at the scene learned that David W. Quinn, age 66, of, Westfield, WI was getting out of his boat at the dock and slipped and fell.

Kenosha woman formally charged with setting three fires

The Kenosha County District Attorney’s Office on Monday officially charged a 37-year-old Kenosha woman for her involvement in three arsons late last month. Maria R. Vilchez-Bucio made her initial appearance before Kenosha County Court Commissioner Loren Keating on Monday afternoon. Keating imposed a $5,000 cash bond and also set a competency hearing for Aug.
