‘Sierra Calls’ in North Carolina create headaches for short-staffed first responders during non-emergency medical calls

Charlotte Firefighters are waving a red flag about a new change to city policy in how first-responders are dispatched to medical calls. The change was announced last week. It creates a type of response being referred to as a “Sierra Call.” WBTV Investigative Reporter David Hodges says the change comes as MEDIC struggles with staffing issues and to keep up with call volume.

Bill to stiffen penalties for firefighter killers clears Senate committee

A Senate committee passed a bill Tuesday that would stiffen criminal penalties against those who murder an on-duty firefighter. Under the proposal (SB 370), the convicted murderer of a firefighter would face the same consequences as a person who killed a police or correctional officer — life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Corn dryer fire in Kiel; More than a dozen fire departments assisted in firefight

Firefighters from more than a dozen fire departments battled a corn dryer fire at the Country Visions Co-op in Kiel, Wisconsin on Tuesday, Nov. 2. Emergency crews were dispatched to the fire around 1:30 p.m. Arriving crews immediately deployed hose lines and began suppression efforts. Due to the height of the dryer, Kiel and New Holstein ladder trucks were deployed.

Fire causes about $150,000 in damage to Town of Burke home

The Sun Prairie Fire and Rescue Company reports a fire caused $150,000 in damage to a home in the Town of Burke Tuesday morning. According to a news release from SPFRC, crews responded to the 6000 block of Rattman Road at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, finding smoke and flames spilling out of a second-story window upon arrival.

Retired Eagle firefighter climbs thousands of steps to honor loved ones and first responders with lung cancer

Chuck Roberts, a retired firefighter from the Eagle Fire Department has managed to raise over $50,000 for the American Lung Association while participating in climbs over the years.

Manitowoc teen forgives homeless man that set her house on fire

Sixteen-year-old Makayla Green said she forgave the homeless man that set her house on fire. After Manitowoc police arrested 56-year-old Charles Cantrell III for the fire that destroyed a home on the 330-block of Mero Street last Monday, Makayla was able to talk with him on the phone. Green was in the process of buying that vacant home.

VIDEO: Neighbors Say Large Warehouse Fire In Pennsylvania Was Intense

A massive four-alarm warehouse fire broke out in Marcus Hook, Delaware County Monday night. Firefighters battled the blaze for several hours at the 200 block of East 10th Street. The fire marks the second warehouse fire this week. On Sunday, a warehouse fire occurred in Port Richmond. Although the Marcus Hook fire started Monday evening, crews wrapped up putting out the fire Tuesday morning.

Labs in California, Florida, Maryland, Massachusetts, Nevada, North Carolina, Rhode Island and Washington state, plus the District of Columbia, have so far spotted at least one case of AY.

Union Grove mobile home fire; Arson Task Force investigating

Deputies from the Racine County Sheriff’s Offices on Sunday, Oct. 31 responded to the area of 11th Avenue and West Street in the Village of Union Grove for a mobile home that was on fire. Upon arrival, deputies observed the mobile home to be fully engulfed with flames. All occupants of the residence and adjacent mobile homes were moved to safety.

Thanks to 24/7 staffing, Holmen Area Fire Department’s emergency response times are improving

The Holmen Area Fire Department’s emergency response times are improving to levels not seen in a while. The La Crosse and Holmen Area fire departments are in a partnership. “We’re very pleased with how this new cooperation is going,” Holmen Area Fire Board president Patrick Barlow said. In July, the La Crosse Common Council approved an agreement between both fire departments.

Dryer catches fire in 12-unit apartment building in Fond du Lac, no one injured

No one was injured after a dryer caught fire in an apartment building in Fond du Lac on Sunday night. According to the Fond du Lac Fire/Rescue, on Oct. 31 around 7:50 p.m., crews responded to Glacier Valley Estates for a reported fire in the third-floor laundry room. When crews arrived they saw smoke coming from a dryer in the laundry room.

Antique Connecticut fire engine back home and restored to its former glory

PHOTOS: The antique, horse-drawn steam engine inside the Yantic Fire Engine Co.'s headquarters bay can't match its modern counterparts when it comes to mobility or pure gallon-pumping power, but it sure does look pretty. After a three-year repair and refurbishment process, the department’s 1891 Silsby Steam Engine is back home in all its nickel-plated glory, with fresh paint, newly upholstered seats and modern coils of hose.

Western Lakes Fire District reveals new drone technology

The Western Lakes Fire District announced last week that they are using new technology — donated drones — which will provide potentially life-saving services when responding to various emergencies in the community. Since receiving the technology in March, Deputy Fire Chief & Lead Pilot Brad Ingersoll said they’ve already used them in a variety of situations, including flying one for approximately six hours during the Roundy’s warehouse shooting in Oconomowoc in March.
