CDC Study: 97% Of Americans Have Toxic ‘Forever Chemicals’ In Their Blood

Nearly every American, the CDC says 97%, has some level of “forever chemicals” in their blood because they are found in so many household products. Now, scientists in Arvada are making it easier for you to test your levels at home. PFAS, or perfluoroalkyl substances, are commonly known as forever chemicals because they can build up in the body over time.

Ten Green Bay residents homeless after blaze causes $80,000 damage to home

Eight children and two adults were staying in temporary housing Sunday, the day after careless use of smoking materials caused $80,000 damage to their west side home. The fire at 910 Elmore St. appears to have begun on the second story of the single-family house. Battalion Chief Tony Piontek said the first firefighters to arrive found smoke coming from the ends of the attic, and from the porch roof.

Nearly a dozen fire departments respond to blaze at Mequon Italian restaurant

Firefighters from 11 departments responded to a fire that broke out at a Mequon Italian restaurant Friday afternoon. The blaze at Zarletti Mequon, 1515 W. Mequon Road, was reported shortly after 2 p.m., Mequon Fire Battalion Chief Brandon Boettcher said. The fire started on the outside of the building and had some extension inside, but crews were able to limit the damage to the exterior of the building and an unoccupied portion of the attic, Boettcher said.

Philadelphia firefighters battle large junkyard fire

VIDEO: Fire crews battled a large fire in a Port Richmond junkyard Thursday afternoon. Crews were called to Aramingo Avenue and Wheatsheaf Lane about 4:30 in the afternoon. They were met with heavy flames. Plumes of thick, black smoke could be seen billowing across the river and into New Jersey by drivers along northbound I95.

West Virginia firefighters participate in unique electric vehicle fire training

As more and more electric vehicles hit the road, first responders are preparing to adapt to the unique emergencies the new technology could bring. Huntington firefighters had the opportunity on Thursday to get hands-on training in this and became the first career department in the country to do so with West Virginia University's unique program in high demand.

Four FDNY Firefighters Die From 9/11-Related Illnesses Within a Week

Within the past week, four more members of the FDNY have died of 9/11-related illnesses. Supervising Fire Marshal John McCauley and firefighter Robert Reynolds passed away on Saturday. Firefighter Michael Verzi died Sunday, and Deputy Chief Vincent Mandala died two days after that. Each served at least twenty years with the fire department, according to service records.

North Carolina county, fire departments team with tech college to recruit more diverse firefighters

Wake County is teaming up with Wake Tech Community College and six other fire departments to recruit more people to work for them. The program is called “Career in a Year.” The goal is to increase racial and gender diversity within its fire departments. The county says right now 97 percent of staff with Wake County Fire Services are male.

June 2, 1983: 23 passengers die onboard Air Canada Flight 797 that caught fire, landed in Ohio

VIDEO: On June 2, 1983, 23 passengers died in a fire onboard Air Canada Flight 797. The flight was coming from Dallas, Texas, and heading to Toronto, Canada, when the cabin crew discovered smoke in a rear lavatory. According to the aircraft accident report, the crew attempted to extinguish the hidden fire before contacting air traffic control and declaring an emergency.

La Crosse, Holmen to extend fire agreement through end of year, referendum coming

The La Crosse and Holmen Area Fire Departments will continue to fight fires together at least through the end of the year, and a referendum is likely coming this fall to possibly increase public safety funding for some of the communities involved. The communities entered into a shared service agreement last summer, which is set to expire at the end of the month.

New grant to help bolster Onalaska high school fire academy

Fire departments across the state are struggling with recruiting and retaining firefighters. When Chief Troy Gudie joined the Onalaska Fire Department in 1989, the staff consisted of 36 paid on-call firefighters. That number has dwindled over the last thirty years, leading Gudie to come up with new ways to recruit fresh faces.

Burlington crash: hot air balloon vs. train

VIDEO: Flight for Life was called to the scene of a crash involving a hot air balloon and a train in Burlington Wednesday night, June 1. The scene of the crash was behind Love Inc. near Calumet Road in Burlington. The three adult occupants sustained life-threatening injuries. Flight for Life was requested and transported two of the three patients to Froedtert Hospital for treatment.

Dozens homeless after massive fire tears through Georgia apartment building

VIDEO: Almost three dozen people were left without a home after flames tore through a Clayton County apartment on Wednesday evening. Firefighters spent several hours battling the massive blaze.
