Virginia firefighters respond after loaded gun stored in oven gets overheated, fires multiple rounds

VIDEO: A loaded gun stored in the oven fired five rounds after getting overheated in Virginia, according to authorities. Chesterfield firefighters responded to a call regarding a fire. When firefighters opened the oven, they found a gun inside. Officials said someone turned the oven on with the gun inside.

FDNY and NYPD members follow in the paths of heroic 9/11 dads

PHOTOS: When the North Tower collapsed on 9/11, Thomas Gambino III knew in his gut that his father, FDNY Firefighter Thomas Gambino Jr., was dead. At his father’s funeral, he knew what he’d be doing the rest of his life. The younger Gambino, who was 20 at the time, is one of more than 75 sons and daughters of the 343 FDNY members lost on 9/11 — or later succumbed to Ground Zero-related diseases — who went on to become firefighters or medics.

Fire causes $100,000 in damage to Marshfield home

A Friday night fire at a Marshfield home has displaced two people and caused about $100,000 in damage, according to the Marshfield Fire Department. They say a call for a fire came in around 9:30 Friday night at a house in the 1100 block of 15th St. Firefighters battled a fire that was in the garage and extended into the attic.

Merrill Fire Department gets $50,000 from Wisconsin Fire Dues program

The Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services just awarded $50,000 to the City of Merrill Fire Department. The funding comes from premiums collected by insurance agencies. Prevention is a key part of the City of Merrill Fire Department’s safety plans. The Merrill Fire Department just received $50,000 from Wisconsin’s 2% Fire Dues program.

VIDEO: Residents allowed to return home following evacuation for commercial fire in Ohio

PHOTOS: Residents are permitted to return to their homes after a commercial fire in Akron that prompted an evacuation order burned for most of Thursday. The all-clear came at 8 p.m. Akron Mayor Shammas Malik earlier Thursday said there were no air quality or chemical concerns outside the evacuation zone as fire officials continued to battle a large chemical fire at SMB Products on Rosemary Boulevard.

More FDNY responders have died from 9/11-related illnesses than the attack itself

The New York City Fire Department has lost dozens of members this past year to diseases related to rescue-and-recovery work after Sept. 11, 2001, pushing the department over a grim threshold: More FDNY responders have now died from 9/11-related diseases than were killed on the day of the attack. “Our list of heroes grows each year,” said FDNY Acting Chief John Esposito at a solemn ceremony Wednesday during which 32 of the most recent deaths were added to the FDNY World Trade Center Memorial Wall.

In 100-degree heat, Los Angeles firefighters rescue worker trapped in trench

VIDEO: After nearly six hours, Los Angeles firefighters saved a construction worker who fell into an 8-foot deep trench in Los Feliz — a rescue mission carried out during a sweltering, triple-digit heat wave. The man was left in serious condition and had to be taken to a hospital by paramedics while two firefighters were treated at the scene for heat exhaustion, with one ultimately taken to a hospital, according to the LA Fire Department.

Massachusetts recognizes September as College Fire Safety Month

The cause: a burning candle left unattended. While no one was injured, that isn’t always the case. A 21-year-old died in an off-campus apartment fire in 2013.

Police chief helps rescue people from house fire in the Village of Elk Mound

VIDEO: A local police chief is being credited for saving people from a burning home Wednesday afternoon. Crews responded to a house fire in the Village of Elk Mound just after 2:30 p.m. The fire burned through the roof of an attached garage on Juniper Avenue. According to the Elk Mound Assistant Fire Chief Larry Zais, two people and multiple pets were still inside the home when the fire started and were able to get out thanks to local law enforcement.

Video shows moments after New Mexico fire truck gets hit by drunk driver

VIDEO: A driver smashed into an Albuquerque Fire Rescue truck in July. The crash happened as the fire truck was responding to a different crash in the Northeast Heights. The crash was caused by a driver officials say had been drinking earlier that night, and it left the fire truck out of service. Luckily no one was injured, but the video shows just how much damage was caused by the crash.

New York fire district to use cloud-based software to help save lives during NFL home opener

The fire district will be the first fire and emergency medical service provider in Western New York to use the software. Las Vegas firefighters react to nearly $1 million towards improving mental health for first responders
