The New York City Fire Department has lost dozens of members this past year to diseases related to rescue-and-recovery work after Sept. 11, 2001, pushing the department over a grim threshold: More FDNY responders have now died from 9/11-related diseases than were killed on the day of the attack. “Our list of heroes grows each year,” said FDNY Acting Chief John Esposito at a solemn ceremony Wednesday during which 32 of the most recent deaths were added to the FDNY World Trade Center Memorial Wall.

VIDEO: After nearly six hours, Los Angeles firefighters saved a construction worker who fell into an 8-foot deep trench in Los Feliz — a rescue mission carried out during a sweltering, triple-digit heat wave. VIDEO: A local police chief is being credited for saving people from a burning home Wednesday afternoon. Crews responded to a house fire in the Village of Elk Mound just after 2:30 p.m. The fire burned through the roof of an attached garage on Juniper Avenue. According to the Elk Mound Assistant Fire Chief Larry Zais, two people and multiple pets were still inside the home when the fire started and were able to get out thanks to local law enforcement.
