New Illinois Law Requires Smoke Detectors With 10-Year Battery Life Or Hardwired Home Units

A new state law that goes into effect Jan. 1 requires all homes to have smoke detectors with a 10-year sealed battery life or a hardwired system. The Rockford Fire Department and the Illinois Firefighters Association held a news conference on Wednesday to draw attention to the law and urge property owners to make the necessary changes now.

Hidrent app in Maine provides off duty firefighters more ways to help their community

If we already trust these men and women in those moments, why not trust them with smaller jobs around the home? That’s the idea behind a new app called “Hidrent,” spelled a little differently. It’s a service that connects off duty firefighters with anyone in the area who needs a task completed.

Pennsylvania EMS gets new wearable carbon monoxide detectors after day care leak

For years, Allentown EMS has had carbon monoxide detectors available for crew, but only one detector per ambulance. After a significant number of carbon monoxide incidents last year, the city moved to get a wearable monitor for each full-time EMS employee. “We’ve had the meters, but we wanted to take it a step further, use them more,” said Mehmet Barzev, chief of EMS operations for the city of Allentown.

Crews battle industrial building fire in Manitowoc

VIDEO: Crews battled a fire at a large commercial building used for storage in Manitowoc. The scene is located at 102 Revere Drive. Part of S 21st Street is blocked near the fire. No one was inside the building when the fire broke out. At about 3:17 a.m., dispatchers received a 911 call reporting fire at the building.

Massachusetts firefighter diagnosed with cancer following free screening

Worcester firefighter Ryan Kelley had a scab on his temple for two years that never really healed. He hadn’t done anything about it, when his whole truck decided to attend a free cancer screening held by DetecTogether and UMass Memorial Health at Polar Park last year. When doctors from UMass saw the scab, they told Kelley it looked like basal cell skin cancer.

Singer Jon Bon Jovi Thanks New Jersey First Responders at Annual Event Celebrating Community

Maryland volunteer fire department gets state-of-the-art airboat for rescues

Milwaukee Fire Chief says reckless driving having an impact on firefighters

Update: Hartland fire incident found to be shooting, murder-suicide

The six people found dead after an apartment fire in the village of Hartland Friday likely died in a murder-suicide incident. Hartland Police Chief Torin Misko said during a press conference Monday evening that all victims had one gunshot wound. He said Connor McKisick, who was a father and stepfather to the four kids, had a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
