Low wages, a lack of work-life balance and burnout are among factors driving emergency medical services personnel around the country to quit ambulance duty.
Last year, the turnover rate for full-time emergency medical technicians, known as EMTs, was 36% and for full-time paramedics, it was 27%, according to an American Ambulance Association survey.

The Madison Fire Department (MFD) responded to a report of an unattended cooking fire that led to $100,000 in damages on the city's north side Saturday.
Bernadette Galvez, a spokesperson for MFD- told 27 News the fire started around 11:30 a.m. in a second-floor apartment on the 700 block of Vera Court due to a resident cooking with grease and leaving it unattended.

A Merrill man is thanking the first responders who saved his life after an explosion last year. Joe Kohn is a service technician. He was working on a cooler compressor at the Marathon gas station when something caused a blast and sent him to the hospital.
Kohn met the firefighters and paramedics who came to his rescue at the Merrill Fire Department on Thursday.

While responding to fire calls, Watertown Mayor Emily McFarland said she recognized the need for V.E.S.T. or Volunteer Emergency Support Team to respond to crises and provide victims with needed services, she said in a press release.
“It became clear to me that because our firefighters are actively fighting a fire and providing emergency medical care, and our police officers are securing the scene, evacuating or interviewing people that no one on the scene was available to serve the families in the moment, so I found this space where I could serve them in their time of need,” McFarland said in the release.
