IAFF mounts legal push against ‘forever chemicals’: ‘It stops now’

The International Association of Fire Fighters called on Monday for the elimination of protective gear that contains “forever chemicals,” saying swift regulatory action is needed to address the toxic substances. The union — which has more than 333,000 members — announced that it has retained the services of three nationally recognized law firms to pursue these goals, and to help members and their families seek compensation for related illnesses.

These benefits will disappear when Biden ends the COVID national and public health emergencies in May

President Joe Biden intends to end the Covid-19 national and public health emergencies on May 11, the White House said Monday. That means that many Americans could have to start paying for Covid-19 testing and treatment after the declarations cease. The White House, in a statement of administration policy announcing opposition to two House Republican measures to end the emergencies, said the national emergency and public health emergency authorities declared in response to the pandemic would each be extended one final time to May 11.

Garage fire causes estimated $250,000 in damage to Brooklyn home

Brooklyn homeowners are displaced after a garage fire Sunday. The Brooklyn Fire & EMS Protection District said several agencies responded to the fire on the 100 block of Stacie Court just before 5 p.m. When crews arrived, they found a "large amount of smoke and flames" coming from the home's attached garage.

Firefighters respond twice to Milwaukee house fire

Milwaukee firefighters twice battled fire at a house near 26th and Michigan on Monday, Jan. 30. Officials tell FOX6 News the first call came around 10:30 a.m. Fire started in the basement of the two-and-a-half story home – and spread to all floors. An extra fire engine was called in due to the bitter cold – so crews could rotate.

Elderly man suffers burns in Grafton home explosion; 'It just blew'

Grafton firefighters were dispatched to a home on Surrey Lane for a report of an explosion on Monday, Jan. 30. Grafton Fire Chief William Rice noted firefighters were dispatched to the neighborhood just after 11 a.m. Monday. When firefighters arrived, there was an older couple in the driveway – a man had suffered minor burns.

Kaukauna firefighters and shelters concerned about extreme cold

The cold weather this week poses a concern for people who have to work outside, including area firefighters who now have to battle a lot of ice buildup. Case in point, firefighters in Kaukauna had to deal with extreme could while responding to a house fire (see related story). It was a combination of fighting heat and flames and the ice from their water freezing up all over the site, which can be dangerous.

Firefighters respond to residential fire near 57th and Birch in Milwaukee

PHOTOS: Firefighters on Monday, Jan. 30 responded to the scene of a fire near 57th Street and Villard Avenue in Milwaukee. The call came in shortly after 5 a.m. First units on scene reported a working fire in a two-story residential structure. Upon arrival, fire crews found one person with burns and another with smoke inhalation and minor injuries.

More than a dozen displaced after apartment fire in Fitchburg

More than a dozen families are displaced after a fire at a Fitchburg apartment building Sunday afternoon. Dane County Communications received calls about a fire at a Fitchburg apartment building near the intersection of High Ridge Trail and Fish Hatchery Road just before 3:30 p.m. Fitchburg Fire Chief Joe Pulvermacher told 27 News about 10 agencies responded to the incident, including crews from Verona, Fitch-Rona, Oregon, McFarland, Maple Bluff, and Madison.

Portage City Council approves new ambulance contract

The Portage City Council has approved a new ambulance contract that will keep Portage and surrounding towns covered for the rest of the year with an option to extend into 2024. In September, Aspirus Wausau Hospital informed the city it was not going to extend the ambulance contract that has covered the city since 1999 and terminated the contract.

VIDEO: Fire crews respond to two-alarm fire in California

Fire crews responded to a two-alarm apartment fire in Oakland’s Cox neighborhood early Sunday morning, according to the Oakland Fire Department. Crews were called to the fire on the 9500 block of Birch Street and safely evacuated all parties inside of the residence. The property will be salvageable after the blaze, OFD said.

2 Oklahoma firefighters injured after crash on highway

New helmet cameras give Iowa first responders a new look inside the fire fight

Kaukauna home total loss due to fire, $400K+ in damages

A home in Kaukauna is now considered a ‘total loss’ following a fire that caused more than $400,000 in damages and its structure to collapse. According to the Kaukauna Fire Department, crews responded to the residence on Woodhaven Lane at 6:45 a.m. on Sunday. When firefighters arrived, the home was already fully engulfed in flames and crews say the structure had already begun to collapse.

Two saved, one person perishes in Racine fire

Racine Fire Department is reporting that two people were saved and one person died in a fire that took place at around 4:00 a.m. at 1833 Woodland Ave. in Racine. According to officials, smoke alarms alerted two of the three people sleeping in the single-story house, and one person, a 74-year-old man was found inside the house alive but unresponsive.
