"It's what we sign up for, that's what part of the job is, we risk our lives to help people," said Beshears. According to the CDC, cancer is the leading cause of death in firefighters.

North Carolina firefighters honor engineer's death five years later with call to action

The Asheville Fire Department remembered the fifth anniversary of the death of engineer Will Willis on Monday. Willis' death was the result of occupational cancer. The father of four’s death was a factor in Asheville firefighters launching an effort to improve cancer benefits for North Carolina firefighters.

Firefighters rappel off top of Children's Hospital of Atlanta

Racine basement fire sparked by electrical issue

An electrical issue caused a fire in a basement near Main Street in Racine on Monday morning, Feb. 27. Firefighters responded to the fire around 8:30 a.m. A resident noticed an electrical failure in one room and smelled smoke in the basement. Firefighters attacked the fire located behind a baseboard heater and checked for extension.

Green Bay kitchen fire blamed on items on top of stove

Two people are out of their home after a kitchen fire on Green Bay’s east side. Firefighters were called to the 500-block of Cornelius Drive shortly after 9 a.m. for a fire on a glass-top stove that spread to the kitchen cabinets. Firefighters had the flames out 5 minutes after they arrived, but by then the fire caused $35,000 in damage.

Appleton police, fire get screened for cancer in U.S. veteran’s memory

More than a half million post-9/11 veterans have been diagnosed with cancer due to exposure to toxic burn pits in the Middle East. The disease took the life of Appleton police investigator Dominic Hall in September. Four months later, the community is coming together to raise awareness and save veterans’ lives.

One person displaced after apartment fire in Fitchburg

The Fitchburg Fire Department responded to an apartment fire Sunday evening. Dane County Public Safety Communications notified the Fitchburg Fire Department of a structure fire at 2229 Rosenberry Rd. around 3:45 p.m. after a resident reported seeing flames in the building. According to officials, the first fire personnel to arrive on the scene did not see any visible smoke or flames.

Two dead in Menomonie house fire

Two people are dead after a fire at a home in the Township of Menomonie. According to the Dunn County Sheriff’s Office, the fire happened at a duplex on 410th Avenue around 5:20 a.m Sunday morning. It was reported to the sheriff’s office there were two people in the building at the time of the fire.

Utah fire station upgrades ambulances with latest technology

Crews respond to porch fire that spread to Sugar Camp home
