Ohio state's legalization of fireworks could help fund firefighter training

Shooting off fireworks in Ohio, a time-honored tradition of lawbreaking across the state, would become fully legal just in time for July 4, 2020, under a bill that passed the House on Wednesday. For decades, Ohioans have been allowed to purchase fireworks but not legally set them off inside the state.

Appleton fire station to close for repairs

A fire station on Appleton's northeast side will close for repairs on Thursday. The Appleton Fire Department says a sturctural engineer determined that the apparatus floor of Fire Station #4, 724 E. Greenfield St., needs to be repaired. While the repairs are done, the station will be closed for 8-10 weeks.

Dryer fire sent smoke into adjoining restaurant, Madison Fire says

A fire inside a dryer at an East Side laundromat Monday night produced enough smoke to carry over into an adjoining restaurant, with nobody hurt in the blaze. The fire was reported at about 9 p.m. at Dana Lou's Coin Laundry, 3583 E. Washington Ave., the Madison Fire Department said. The smoke wafted into OM Indian Fusion Cuisine, 3579 E.

B.U.G. Fire ready to show thanks with Gardner station open house Sunday

The Brussels-Union-Gardner Fire Department will cap off Fire Prevention Week on Sunday by showing off their newly improved station. The B.U.G. Fire Department’s Gardner station now includes new apparatus bays, an improved electrical system, a gear closet, and more. Fire Chief Curt Vandertie says he cannot thank the community enough for their support for the improved station they now call home.

Houston firefighters, mayor tangle over perceived snubs

Simmering tensions and acrimony between Houston firefighters and Mayor Sylvester Turner have boiled over after the mayor erupted at firefighters who spurned him at two recent public events. The most recent incident, which took place at a Houston Rockets game Thursday, prompted the Houston Professional Fire Fighters Association Local 341 to send Turner a letter warning him not to threaten the association's membership.

Minnesota paramedic killed in crash with semi

The Minnesota State Patrol has identified a paramedic killed when the ambulance she was riding in crashed into a stalled semi on Interstate 694 in Brooklyn Center Monday. Sara DuPaul, a Minnesota State Trooper, said the semi stalled at about 6:45 p.m. in the apex near the split with Interstate 94. She said about 15 minutes later the semi was being towed when an ambulance came from I-694 and attempted to merge, striking the back of the semi.

California fire chief loses home while battling Wine Country fires

As wildfires swept through and decimated neighborhoods in Northern California, some of the first responders lost their own homes as they were helping to evacuate residents. One of them was Mill Valley Fire Chief Tom Welch. Welch, a Santa Rosa resident, lost his home, then went back and helped with the fire response in Napa and Sonoma counties after he and his family evacuated, Linn Walsh, assistant to the Mill Valley city manager, said Tuesday.

Minnesota city investigating after union says fire chief used derogatory term in email

The head of the union representing rank-and-file St. Paul firefighters has filed a workplace conduct complaint against Fire Chief Tim Butler, saying he used a derogatory term in an email to a firefighter last week. Butler said on Monday that he used a term that was “unprofessional and uncalled for” when he was frustrated.

New York state memorial adds names of firefighters who died from 9/11-related illnesses

The names of 112 New York City firefighters who died of illnesses after spending time working in the rubble of the World Trade Center after the Sept. 11 attacks were added Tuesday to a memorial in the state’s capital city for firefighters killed in the line of duty. The Fire Department of New York firefighters make up most of the 118 new names etched onto to the New York State Fallen Firefighters Memorial located at the Empire State Plaza in downtown Albany.

Update: Black firefighters support Detroit probationary firefighter fired over watermelon

A firefighter who was terminated for alleged racist misconduct is receiving support from his former colleagues. FOX2 reported that probationary firefighter Robert Pattison was fired for bringing a watermelon to his new station that is predominantly black on his first day after some African-American firefighters were offended.

Spring Green volunteer fire department is staffed by generations of families

Aliens made me do it: Man vandalizes Sheboygan home

A 31-year-old Sheboygan man is facing multiple charges after telling officers that aliens made him vandalize a home in the 900 block of Kentucky Avenue several times over the past three weeks — including trying to set the home on fire. Anouphong Inphachack was arrested Oct. 5 and charged with two counts felony arson of a building, two misdemeanor counts of graffiti, two counts criminal damage to property, and one misdemeanor count of carrying a concealed weapon.

Milwaukee Firefighters Plan to Fight Job Cuts in Proposed Budget

According to their release, if these cuts are approved, it will mark the elimination of over 300 front line firefighters since Mayor Tom Barrett took office 14 years ago.

None hurt in Chippewa Falls apartment fire

A kitchen fire Sunday morning in Chippewa Falls caused an estimated $2,000 in damage to an apartment on the 900 block of First Avenue, Battalion Chief John Bowe of Chippewa Falls Fire and EMS said. According to email correspondence from Bowe Sunday: At (4:24 p.m.) the afternoon of 10/08/2017, the Chippewa Falls Fire & Emergency Services were dispatched to 918 First Ave apartment #2 for a report of a possible kitchen fire.
