A private ambulance company about to begin service in Pend Oreille County says they're being told not to respond to calls local fire volunteers can handle on their own.
One fire chief said it's a matter of saving resources, but the company says it won't be able to survive.
When Pend Oreille paramedics begin service in Pend Oreille county, they will be the only first responders licensed to transport patients requiring advanced life support.

VIDEO: Firefighters were called to a garage fire on the 300 block of North Water Street Friday afternoon. The garage was engulfed in flames and an SUV in the driveway was also on fire when crews arrived. Officials say the homeowner was home, and was alerted by a neighbor of the fire. No injuries were reported, but the house and a neighboring house sustained heat damage.

A fire broke out in a silo on a farm in the Town of Plover in Marathon County. It happened around 8:00pm Saturday night. A family of three must find someplace else to stay after a fire severely damaged a two-story house on the village's west side. Firefighters from multiple departments responded about 9:20 a.m. to the blaze at 4 S. Third St., Winneconne-Poygan Assistant Chief Al Andersen said. Two dogs were in the building, and one person was "slightly injured" while leaving.

The former Wausau firefighter charged with sexually assaulting a patient he was transporting to the hospital pleaded not guilty Friday.
Clifford Heiser, 32, was arrested by Wausau Police after an investigation into a complaint from a female patient on Sept. 13. The complaint was filed by a 29-year-old woman who was transported to an area hospital by a Wausau Fire Department ambulance.

A car burst into flames after being hit by a train in the village of Richfield, the Washington County Sheriff's Office said. The crash happened at 5:31 p.m. Wednesday on Bark Lake Road east of Scenic Road in the Village of Richfield. Deputies said a caller told them the car had been pushed 2,000 feet from the railroad crossing and was located behind a residential subdivision.

Five people are dead following a large house fire in Seneca County between Bascom and Fostoria on SR 18 Thursday morning.
So far, fire officials identified one of the five victims, 19-year-old Austin Rainey. Rainey was a cadet for the Bascom Fire Volunteer Department.
The identities, ages and genders of the remaining four victims were not identified, though Seneca County Public Information Officer Dean Henry confirmed a family of three adults, including Rainey, and two children lived at the home.

St. Tammany Parish Sheriff Randy Smith said Wednesday that the FBI has been brought in to help investigate the mysterious death of Nanette Krentel, who was found shot to death and badly burned in July.

Two Verona men were charged Wednesday with arson after police said they admitted to setting fire to an abandoned farmhouse and setting off fireworks inside the home. Kyle D. Brazee and Evan R. Ruchti, both 18, were charged with arson for the July 4 fire that destroyed an abandoned house on Highway M, near Shady Bend Road and Liberty Drive.

Thirteen people were displaced after a fire damaged an assisted-living facility in Tomah. The Tomah Fire Department was dispatched shortly before 7 p.m. to Cranberry Country assisted living facility, where staff was evacuating the building upon arrival of firefighters. No injuries were reported. Tomah Fire Chief Tim Adler said there was heavy smoke throughout the building and that entry was made with a hand line to extinguish the blaze.

The son of a Honolulu firefighter who died after a training accident in 2016 has filed a lawsuit against the city.
In June of last year, 63-year-old Cliff Rigsbee was riding a rescue sled during an offshore training exercise near Kaimana Beach Park.
After plowing through a series of large waves, he went unconscious.
