6 people injured in Chippewa Falls apartment fire

VIDEO: Six people are hurt, including a firefighter, after a fire at an apartment building in Chippewa Falls. It happened at the St. Joseph's apartment building on Pearl Street around 10 a.m. The Chippewa Falls Fire Department says the fire started on a mattress in an apartment on the second story of the building but there's no word on how it happened.

Alaska city's new fire chief is first woman to lead the department

Jodie Hettrick has been appointed to lead the Anchorage Fire Department, according to an announcement Wednesday from the mayor’s office. Hettrick joined the department in 2012. She has served as acting chief since the previous chief, Denis LeBlanc, retired in May. Now that her position is official, Hettrick says there are some internal initiatives that can go forward.

Hernando County commissioners shut down the Hernando Beach Volunteer Fire Department on Valentine’s Day 2017. They did so for good reason. The volunteers were failing to respond to 911 calls. They’d ignored a state requirement to hire a medical director. For more than two years, they never produced a financial audit to show how they were spending taxpayer dollars.

As fire chief search nears 3 years, Rhode Island city wants to eliminate mandatory retirement age

Providence Public Safety Commissioner Steven Pare said Monday he plans to conduct yet another search for a permanent fire chief, but it will likely begin after the City Council considers a proposal to remove the mandatory retirement age for high-ranking members of the fire and police departments. Pare told the Council Finance Committee the city’s search for a fire chief is nearing the three-year mark due in large part to an existing ordinance that requires firefighters to retire when they turn 60.

Milwaukee crossing guard wakes up to fire in apartment, nearly dies trying to fight it himself

VIDEO: A Milwaukee crossing guard is back home with relatives after spending two weeks in the hospital recovering from a fire at his apartment last month near 5th and Lapham. Jesus Gracia said he lost nearly everything in the fire, but thanks to him, everyone in the apartment complex got out alive. On May 20, Gracia fell asleep on the couch.

Town of Gibraltar to introduce fire chief candidates Friday

Electric co-op helps fund equipment for Bear Lake-Haugen Fire Rescue

Mauston breaks ground on new fire station

Officials from the city of Mauston and MSA Professional Services met June 5 to officially break ground at the site of the new Mauston Fire Station. Mauston Mayor Brian McGuire said the new station is part of a long term plan to improve the city’s services. “We’ve been working on this a couple of years and we worked to find the most economical solution to improve our safety and services to people in the community,” McGuire said.

Person found dead on burning porch in Kenosha

A person was found dead inside a burning enclosed porch at a home on 14th Avenue early Tuesday. The Kenosha Police and the Kenosha Fire Department are investigating the fire, which was reported at about 5 a.m. Tuesday. When firefighters arrived at the tiny, 360-square-foot home, 7732 14th Ave., they found the enclosed porch engulfed in flames, according to Fire Chief Charles Leipzig.

Ohio mayor ends illegal overtime reporting in police, fire departments

Prompted by a federal investigation, the mayor of Akron has put an end to the illegal, off-the-books tracking of overtime in the city’s police and fire departments. For more than 30 years, countless overtime hours — presumably tens of thousands — were often never recorded through the city’s formal payroll process, making it impossible for federal officials to get a true accounting of whether employees were being properly compensated.

Baltimore to use $4 million in excess speed camera revenue to cover Fire Department overtime

Baltimore’s revived speed camera system is generating millions more in revenue than what was planned — and city officials now intend to use that money to balance the Fire Department’s budget. The Board of Estimates, which is controlled by Mayor Catherine Pugh, is slated to vote Wednesday to use an extra $4 million generated by speed camera fines — on top of the $8 million in budgeted revenue from them — to help pay unfunded overtime expenses in the Fire Department.

Rock County firefighter rescues 11 ducklings

There are several lucky ducks in Rock County that were freed from a tight spot by a firefighter last week, according to a news release. The Beloit Fire Department said firefighter DeCarlos Nora helped rescue a group of ducklings that were stuck in a storm drain Friday. The fire department shared pictures of the Nora pulling the ducklings from the drain.
