A local fire department is grieving after their chief passed away Sunday night after he went into cardiac arrest following a training. Hyde County Emergency Services says Engelhard Fire & Rescue Chief Tony Spencer III died shortly after the fire department held a prayer service for him.
Spencer went into cardiac arrest a few hours following a Firefighter I & II hose certification class Thursday evening, May 31.

When Beverly fire Chief Paul Cotter turns 65 next spring, he wants to still be serving alongside his fellow firefighters, not forced to retire as state law mandates.
The city has petitioned the state Legislature to allow Cotter to continue to work, and retire on his own terms. The matter is currently under consideration.

A firefighters organization recently filed complaints with federal and state agencies about a training exercise, claiming that fire officials endangered its members and the public when they burned an empty Pungo house that contained asbestos.
The city and the firefighters group agree the house contained the material, but how much was there and when fire officials learned of its existence is in dispute.

A man has died from his injuries after he was struck by a Phoenix Fire Department vehicle as it was leaving a station, according to officials.
The incident occurred Monday near 12th Avenue and Pierce Street around 11:37 a.m., police said.
The man was taken to the hospital, but was later pronounced dead, according to police.

Chicago Fire Department diver Juan Bucio, who died last week while trying to rescue a missing boater, was laid to rest on Monday.
Hundreds attended the funeral at St. Rita High School Chapel on the Southwest Side, where Bucio's casket - draped in a Chicago flag - arrived via a CFD fire engine to the sounds of bagpipes.

A suspicious fire in Queens injured nine firefighters and two civilians early Monday morning.
The fire broke out inside the home on 41st Avenue in Flushing just before 2:15 a.m.
The two people who escaped before firefighters arrived had no business being in there.

A lot of dads miss the birth of a child because of work. Steve Hein was there because of work.
His wife called him and told him she needed him home immediately. He drove home and found her giving birth to their son. He called for paramedics, who included some of the people he had just been working with, and delivered his son alongside his teammates.

A veteran firefighter who nearly died fighting a triple-decker fire two years ago was promoted to the rank of battalion chief, ending a year-long legal battle.
Joseph Fontaine was promoted in a ceremony Thursday, pinned by his wife in front of his friends and family.
"I almost died to get to where I am," Fontaine said.

Fire service advice to "stay put" in the Grenfell Tower fire had "effectively failed" within around half an hour of the fire starting, a report for the blaze inquiry has found.
A safety expert said there was "an early need for total evacuation", but it was not an "easy decision to make".
Dr Barbara Lane also suggested cladding was the primary cause of the spread of June's fire, which caused 72 deaths.

Authorities say a 39-year-old off-duty firefighter was killed when his motorcycle struck a large bear on a Central Oregon highway and he was hit by another vehicle. Oregon State Police says Rhett Larsen, of Bend, died at the scene of Saturday night's crash on Highway 26 near Warm Springs.
The Bend Fire Department on social media Sunday called the fire engineer a "respected leader" and that he is deeply missed.

According to a press release from the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office, Amy K. Duley, 50, of Merrill was killed Friday in a crash in the Town of Pine River. It happened at about 9:25 p.m. Friday night on County Road W just south of Apartment Street. Duley was the driver and lone occupant of the car. She was found trapped inside and was removed by first responders.

The remains of an 84-year-old woman were found Thursday inside a home that burned near Tomahawk. A caller reported a possible structure fire southwest of Tomahawk, in the Lincoln County town of Bradley. at 12:14 p.m. Thursday, according to officials. Firefighters and the Lincoln County Sheriff's Department responded to the scene on Robin Lane and found a fire had started inside of the home possibly during the previous 24 hours and had extinguished itself, according to police.
