President Joe Biden announced Thursday that the White House has approved the cancellation of nearly $6 billion in federal student debt for thousands of public service workers.
The 78,000 eligible public service workers include teachers, nurses and firefighters, according to the White House.
"These public service workers have dedicated their careers to serving their communities, but because of past administrative failures, never got the relief they were entitled to under the law," Biden said in a statement touting the move.

Multiple area fire departments worked to put out a fire in rural Pepin County Wednesday evening.
According to Durand Fire Chief Jamey King, it happened in the town of Lima, near County Road T and L Poeschel Road. A 911 caller said there was a swamp on fire near the intersection.
King said they could see smoke from miles away.

Lincoln County is set to give people free in-depth mental health training this spring.
The county's Health and Human Services building will host the first of two planned "mental health first aid" sessions on April 1, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
It's only available for the first 30 adults who sign up, designed to help spot warning signs of mental illness and substance use disorders and give people knowledge on when to start conversations with people who may need them.

More than 150 Chicago firefighters battled a three-alarm fire at a business in the Back of the Yards neighborhood.
The fire broke out at about 10:43 p.m. in the 4200-block of South Ashland Avenue, Chicago police said.
Massive flames and clouds of smoke could be seen billowing from the business, where CFD says a large amount of wooden pallets burned.

Authorities in De Pere issued a reminder to the community after a house fire was caused by hot embers from a recreational fire being too close.
According to the De Pere Fire Department, on March 19 around 8:10 a.m., crews were sent to a reported house fire in the 2200 block of Glen Meadows Circle. When crews arrived, smoke and flames could reportedly be seen coming from the back of the house.
