A fifth alarm that burned through two Jersey City homes brought down a live power line on firefighters, injuring seven of them.
The fire broke out between the Irving Street homes just before 3 a.m. this morning and quickly spread.
As firefighters arrived, an energized power line came down on their fire truck, shocking at least four firefighters and a captain.

The latest came Tuesday when a single-engine Piper PA-32 landed shortly after noon on Interstate 5 east of the Del Mar Fairgrounds, hitting a Kia sedan and losing part of a wing after it became lodged in the back of an Audi SUV.

A large crowd of firefighters took the podium at City Council on Tuesday, pleading for higher pay.
Mayor Kelly's budget is currently under review, and one measure focuses on a 24% salary increase for fire cadets. Right now, the starting salary is $32,524 . The increase would bump it up to $40,330.
It's an increase that firefighters say is sorely needed.

Inside the Peshtigo Fire Museum are artifacts of the 1871 fire, which burned 1.5 million acres and took the lives of what is estimated to be between 1,200 and 2,400 people.
Now, to commemorate the sesquicentennial, a book called "The Great Fires in Wisconsin of 1871" has been republished in order to educate people about the fire.

PHOTOS: A piece of Brookfield history found its way home to the city's fire department.
Firefighter helmets belonging to volunteer firefighter Arthur Berres were dropped off Thursday by two of his grandchildren, Mark Roesch and his sister, Mary Ellen Pankow.
Roesch said the family was going through family pictures and found photos of Berres and his wife, Edna (Nachtstein) Berres.

Emergency crews were called to the home, which was still being built on Scarlett Drive, shortly after 11 a.m.

A Kentucky lawmaker plans to file a bill that would help the families of first responders who died from COVID-19.
Rep. Thomas Huff, a Republican from Shepherdsville, said his proposal is a result of the twin tragedy that occurred at the Zoneton Fire Department.
Chief Rob Orkies died in December 2020 after a battle with both cancer and COVID-19.

The city of Appleton is commemorating the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks with a procession and ceremony.
The procession on Sept. 11 is set to begin at Fire Station No. 1, at the corner of Atlantic and Drew streets, at 8:45 a.m. That is the time when the first plane hit the World Trade Center.
The procession then moves south on Drew Street to City Park.

Three people were injured in a two-vehicle crash Saturday in Buffalo County, according to authorities.
The Buffalo County Sheriff’s Department said Monday that Kylie Barningham, 28, of Pepin was driving east on Hwy. 35 and began to turn north onto Hwy. 25 when she failed to yield to Christina Gbejewoh, 43, Woodbury, Minn.

A 40-year-old Montgomery City, Missouri man passed away after attempting to rescue two kids from Lake Michigan at North Beach in Racine, Sunday, August 22.

A highway is closed just over the border in Wisconsin after officials say a Jenni-O truck overturned, spilling 800 turkeys and prompting a large clean up effort.
Highway 63 is closed from County Road DD to County Road E, about two miles north of Baldwin in Baldwin Township, according to the St. Croix County Sheriff.

Multiple houses under construction were damaged or destroyed after Phoenix firefighters battled a second-alarm fire Sunday morning. Arizona's Family cameras show several structures went up in flames near Bell Road and Tatum Boulevard.
Phoenix fire crews responded to the area around 9:30 a.m. for reports of a house fire.
