The City of Appleton will hold a solemn procession and ceremony to honor the victims and first responders of the 9/11 attacks on Saturday.

Information and rationale relating to the need for additional staffing for the Fort Atkinson Fire and Police departments, starting in 2023, was presented to city council members and the public Tuesday night.
The city is proposing to bring 911 ambulance service under the umbrella of the fire department, and as part of a public safety staffing proposal will be looking at an April 5, 2022 referendum question asking the electorate for approval to exceed the state levy limit for the purpose of adding 2 police officers, 6 firefighter/paramedics and 6 firefighter/EMTs and all necessary equipment to support those additions to allow those departments to meet the growing demand for their services.

The land passersby see cleared in west Oak Ridge near the Oak Ridge Turnpike will soon host a training center for first responders, including those responding to nuclear emergencies.

Fire departments across Massachusetts face a “daunting” task in replacing the foams they use to fight fires caused by fuels or other flammable liquids, one chief told a task force mulling ways the state can address contamination by a class of chemicals known as PFAS.
Per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances are a group of long-lasting, man-made chemicals used for decades in consumer products like non-stick coating and in certain firefighting foams.

Some scientists have called it "superhuman immunity" or "bulletproof." But immunologist Shane Crotty prefers "hybrid immunity."
"Overall, hybrid immunity to SARS-CoV-2 appears to be impressively potent," Crotty wrote in commentary in Science back in June.

As the 20th anniversary of 9/11 approaches, local firefighters are remembering the FYPD firefighters who gave their lives on that fateful day.
Every year, Pierce Manufacturing and the Green Bay Metro Fire Department hosts a 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb at Lambeau Field. Participants climb or walk the equivalent of the 110 stories of the World Trade Center in memory of the attacks.

VIDEO: The Las Vegas Fire Department responded and put out a large fire at a vacant warehouse in downtown Las Vegas on Sunday night.
The heavy smoke and fire were visible for miles as the two-story building at 1026 S. Main went up in flames shortly after 8 p.m. According to Las Vegas Fire & Rescue, crews were able to contain the fire from spreading to other structures and extinguished the blaze in less than a half-hour.

This Sept. 11, Tallmadge Circle will once again be lit up with nearly 3,000 candles to represent the lives lost at the World Trade Centers, the Pentagon and in Shanksville, Pa. on the 20th anniversary of the deadliest terrorist act in world history.
Since 2003, the Tallmadge Fire Department, with help from local volunteers, have lit 343 red candles for the fire department personnel who died that day, 60 blue candles for police, 55 green candles for military and 2,518 white candles for civilians.
