Training Center in Tennessee to teach first responders to work nuclear emergencies

The land passersby see cleared in west Oak Ridge near the Oak Ridge Turnpike will soon host a training center for first responders, including those responding to nuclear emergencies. Morris Hassler, senior director of Global Security & Strategic Partnership for Consolidated Nuclear Security (CNS), the company which manages Y-12 National Security Complex, recently spoke to the Oak Ridge Chamber of Commerce about these new buildings, which together will be called the Oak Ridge Enhanced Technology and Training Center.

Nearly 2 decades after 9/11, a former firefighter sees the NYC memorial for the first time

VIDEO: Michael Silvestri dipped his fingers into the flowing water and made the sign of the cross, from his forehead to his broken heart. The waters here, in the South Pool of New York City's 9/11 Memorial, are like holy water, he said. "It's sacred. It's their graves," Silvestri said. Toxic firefighting foams; a challenge for Massachusetts to quickly replace

Fire departments across Massachusetts face a “daunting” task in replacing the foams they use to fight fires caused by fuels or other flammable liquids, one chief told a task force mulling ways the state can address contamination by a class of chemicals known as PFAS. Per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances are a group of long-lasting, man-made chemicals used for decades in consumer products like non-stick coating and in certain firefighting foams.

New Studies Find Evidence Of 'Superhuman' Immunity To COVID-19 In Some Individuals

Some scientists have called it "superhuman immunity" or "bulletproof." But immunologist Shane Crotty prefers "hybrid immunity." The annual 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb in Green Bay is keeping the memory of the firefighters of 9/11 alive

As the 20th anniversary of 9/11 approaches, local firefighters are remembering the FYPD firefighters who gave their lives on that fateful day. Every year, Pierce Manufacturing and the Green Bay Metro Fire Department hosts a 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb at Lambeau Field. Participants climb or walk the equivalent of the 110 stories of the World Trade Center in memory of the attacks.

Firefighters extinguish large blaze at downtown Las Vegas warehouse

VIDEO: The Las Vegas Fire Department responded and put out a large fire at a vacant warehouse in downtown Las Vegas on Sunday night. The heavy smoke and fire were visible for miles as the two-story building at 1026 S. Main went up in flames shortly after 8 p.m. According to Las Vegas Fire & Rescue, crews were able to contain the fire from spreading to other structures and extinguished the blaze in less than a half-hour.

Ohio city continues tradition of lighting candles for lives lost on September 11

This Sept. 11, Tallmadge Circle will once again be lit up with nearly 3,000 candles to represent the lives lost at the World Trade Centers, the Pentagon and in Shanksville, Pa. on the 20th anniversary of the deadliest terrorist act in world history. Since 2003, the Tallmadge Fire Department, with help from local volunteers, have lit 343 red candles for the fire department personnel who died that day, 60 blue candles for police, 55 green candles for military and 2,518 white candles for civilians.

Louisiana fire chief riding bike to calls after Hurricane Ida damages bridges

There's a volunteer fire chief who is riding is bicycle to answer calls for help because the bridges in his town are out. In a post, the State Fire Marshal talked about what Lockport Fire Chief Armand Autin is doing to serve his Lafourche Parish town. "Because the bridges are out due to Ida, Chief Autin is driving his truck to the closest bridge, then riding his bicycle across the bayou to respond to incidents," the post says.

Washington fire & rescue introduces department's first all-female crew

For the first time in Graham Fire & Rescue's history, the department has an all-female crew. "It can be a challenge to really have women even be interested in the fire service," said Graham Fire & Rescue Lieutenant Jill D'Len. 9/11 memorial events in Northeast Wisconsin, locals honor fallen heroes

In Northeast Wisconsin, there are multiple events popping up to pay tribute to everyone who died during the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001 – honoring all of the individuals 20 years later. According to Associated Press, nearly 3,000 people were killed in the 9/11 attacks. 2,750 people were killed at the World Trade Center in New York, 184 died at the Pentagon, and 40 more died in Pennsylvania.

Wisconsin fire departments awarded $1.7 million for training, equipment

Several fire departments in Wisconsin, including a few in the south central region, received more than $1.7 million Friday to fund new training programs and equipment. The grants will go directly to fire departments and EMS groups that are not affiliated with a hospital, explained Rep. Ron Kind (D- La Crosse).

Village of Viola creates flood mitigation plan

Flooding problems are nothing new for Vernon County, but one village is taking steps to lessen the future impacts of the Kickapoo River. In a recent County by County, Alex Loroff describes the effect flooding has had on the village of Viola. The Kickapoo River runs throughout eastern Vernon County, making its way down from Ontario, through La Farge, and eventually flowing into the village of Viola.
