A respiratory virus that sometimes paralyzes children is spreading across the U.S., raising concerns about another possible rise in polio-like illnesses.
Wastewater samples have detected a significant escalation in an enterovirus called D68, which, in rare cases, has been linked to acute flaccid myelitis, or AFM.

A fire at Jefferson East Elementary School early Tuesday morning meant no classes for students.
The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office said a fire started in the basement of the school. The Jefferson Fire Department said the first floor of the school had heavy smoke damage.
"The fire is in the generator room, so there's an emergency generator for this building, backup power, and the fire was clearly in and around the generator," said Jefferson Fire Chief Ron Wegner.

Buffalo Firefighter's responded to a two-alarm fire on Buffalo's west side early Wednesday morning.
Firefighters were called to Pooley Place just around 4:30am for a report of a fire at 62-64 Pooley Pl. The duplex was fully engulfed in flames and quickly spread to neighboring houses.
Two civilians and two firefighters were injured, but none of their injuries are life threatening.

VIDEO: After months of negotiations, the City of San Antonio and the San Antonio Professional Firefighters Association (SAPFA) have struck a deal on a new collective bargaining contract.
The new contract will give firefighters and EMS a 20% raise over the next three years. It's the first legitimate pay increase that they've received in the last decade, and it's the first time they've been able to vote for their contract in over 15 years,” SAPFA president Joe Jones said.

A firefighter-paramedic with the department died during a training exercise on Tuesday.

An off-duty Fond du Lac police officer is credited for spotting a fire on a porch of a home on S. Peters Avenue – and alerting the family inside.
The fire was spotted by the off-duty officer just after midnight on Monday, Sept. 17. A news release says he quickly notified the sleeping residents inside – and called the fire.

De Pere Fire Rescue and the Fox River West Fire District were dispatched Sunday morning after a passer-by noticed smoke and flames coming from a speculated vehicle or building on Red Maple Road.

Nearly 24 hours after a pipeline in Deer Park burst into flames, that fire was still intensely burning. The temperature from the fire was so intense it torched a nearby playground. Four people and two cats are without a home after a fire tore through their apartment, which sits atop a café in Madison.

An 8-unit apartment complex in Beaver Dam is "uninhabitable" after a fire on Saturday, according to the Beaver Dam Fire & Rescue Department.

According to dispatch, the call came in at 4:09 p.m.

A Waukesha firefighter was hurt while responding to an apartment fire on Friday afternoon, Sept. 13.
It happened on Pebble Valley Road off University Drive around 3:20 p.m. Officials said a passerby called 911 after seeing black smoke coming from a second-floor window of the apartment building.
