Wisconsin Rapids Fire Department fields record number of emergency calls

The Wisconsin Rapids Fire Department says it received a record number of calls for service once again in 2022. Chief Todd Eckes says the department responded to 4,747 calls in 2022, after fielding 4,600 in 2021 and just under 4,000 in 2020. He adds there has been an increased need in medical services, which could correlate with the number of older adults that call the city home.

1 person found dead following Dodgeville house fire

One person was found dead following a house fire in Dodgeville on Tuesday, according to fire officials. A statement from the Dodgeville Fire Department said fire crews were called to the intersection of North Main Street and Jewett Street for a house fire at 1:38 p.m. on Tuesday. Fire crews arrived on scene to find heavy smoke and were able to quickly put out the fire.

Barron-Maple Grove Fire Chief Mike Romsos retires after 31 years of fighting fires; ‘It’s rewarding to help people’

National program to have emergency plan in schools for sudden cardiac arrest started in Wisconsin

Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin suffered cardiac arrest in Monday night's game against the Cincinnati Bengals. In a cardiac emergency, timing is a matter of life or death. Paramedics quickly began performing CPR on Damar Hamlin and used an automatic external defibrillator (AED) on the football player.

VIDEO: Historic Oregon church burns in 3-alarm fire

Portland fire and rescue crews are responding to a three-alarm fire in the 900 block of SW Clay Street. Crews were dispatched shortly before 5:30 p.m. Tuesday to the fire at the former Portland Korean Church. The building was completed in 1905, initially as the First German Evangelical Church. It remained in use by the same congregation for 73 years.

Fire department in Illinois training to reduce firetruck accidents

From Jan. 1, 2019, through Nov. 5, 2022, the EFD reported 65 accidents involving a city-owned vehicle, according to data released to the RoundTable though a Freedom of Information Act request.

Drone video shows 63 rescued after The Wheel at ICON Park in Florida loses power

Orange County Fire Rescue released drone video on Tuesday showing crews working to rescue 63 people from The Wheel at ICON Park after the ride lost power on New Year’s Eve. The video shows fire crews climbing up the ride and onto the gondolas to reach the people trapped inside on Saturday. More than 20 pods were occupied when the ride stopped functioning, according to fire rescue.

Seattle firefighters responded to 1,500 encampment fires in 2022

VIDEO/PHOTOS: New data released Tuesday by the Seattle Fire Department shows the city’s fire crews responded to 1,538 encampment fires during 2022, averaging 128 a month. The data reflects a slight increase from 2021, when Seattle Fire recorded 1,446 fires at encampments, and 854 in 2020. On Monday, KOMO News reported on an encampment fire in South Lake Union where wooden structures and tents burned.

One person killed in Mequon house fire

One person has died in an overnight house fire on Mequon Road early Tuesday morning. According to a Southern Ozaukee Fire & EMS press release, a witness driving to work reported seeing flames coming from a residence located in the 12000 block of W. Mequon Road at approximately 2:49 a.m. The witness advised authorities that he did not see anything else out of the ordinary while passing the home.

Fire in Outagamie County leaves family without a home

One family is without a home after a Tuesday morning fire in Outagamie County. According to firefighters from the Town of Ellington Fire Department, a fire broke out at a home across the road from the fire station on Highway 76 at around 9:30 a.m. The family was home at the time but managed to evacuate safely.

Seven fires during La Crosse area fire departments' 'Keep the Wreath Green' campaign

The annual “Keep the Wreath Green” campaign did not go as well as firefighters hoped. For this campaign, local departments hang a wreath outside their stations between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Every time participating departments respond to a structure fire, they switch a bulb on the wreath from green to red.
