Camron Vollbrecht was on top of a mountain when he got the call he was going to be Superior’s next fire chief.
“I was in northwestern Colorado on an elk hunt with some buddies from college,” said Vollbrecht, who currently serves as a battalion chief for the Superior Fire Department. He got the call from outgoing fire chief Scott Gordon.

An Amish home was destroyed by fire on Monday night.
An Amish elder asked News 8 Now not to shoot footage of the fire. We honored their request, which is why you only see footage of firefighters. Genoa-Harmony Fire Chief Mike Hanson said winter weather caused several problems.

A horse in Wisconsin owes its life to some neighbors who sprang into action when it got into trouble on Sunday.
The animal had fallen through ice on a frozen lake, and rescuers had to think fast to get him to safety.
At Big Wood Lake, because of the fresh snow, you can’t see the horse’s tracks.
But what you can see, all the footprints from the people who came to his rescue and a flat area where the horse was dragged to shore150 yards from where he fell in the ice.

VIDEO: Two people were hospitalized Monday morning after swimming to shore to escape a massive fire that destroyed several boats near a marina in Hollywood.
Hollywood Police said officers arrived at the scene at 700 Polk Street in the middle of North Lake just before 1:30 a.m. after reports of at least three boats in flames.

VIDEO: A tractor-trailer hit a fire engine on Monday while crews were on the scene of a crash on Interstate 85, according to the Greensboro Fire Department.
No one was inside Engine 61 when it was hit.
No one was hurt, including the driver of the tractor-trailer.
The fire truck was heavily damaged, but crews were able to drive it back to the fire station.

A Buffalo firefighter returns to work this week after he settled his wrongful termination lawsuit with the City of Buffalo and the fire department, which terminated him in 2021 for testing positive for cannabis despite being a registered medical patient.
Scott Martin, an Air Force veteran who served two tours in the Middle East, was a Buffalo EMT and firefighter for over a decade, when he got suspended in December 2020 for testing positive for cannabis on a random workplace test.

Two people are displaced after improperly discarded coals caused a house fire Sunday morning.
Madison Fire Department (MFD) spokesperson Cynthia Schuster reported crews responded to Stevens Street near Grand Avenue just after 10 a.m. for a fire on the back porch of a home.
Schuster said firefighters noticed heavy smoke from two blocks away and, upon arrival, saw heavy brown smoke coming from the eaves and flames from a window on one side of the house.

A fire at a home in Janesville killed two people Friday afternoon, city officials said.
The fire broke out at a home in the 2300 block of Hawaii Drive just before 1:15 p.m. An initial report said flames were visible and people were trapped inside, according to a news release. When firefighters got to the scene, they found heavy smoke and fire coming from the house.

Fire crews in Maple Grove knocked down a large fire early Sunday morning that burned at a building belonging to a soil supplier.
The Maple Grove Fire Department was called just after 4:30 p.m. for a report of a fire at a campground on Brockton Lane North. However, when crews arrived they determined the fire was actually burning at a building belonging to a soil supplier called Commercial Black Dirt Inc.

The Unified Fire Authority's newest station in Midvale was designed with mental health in mind.
Station 125, located at 655 W. Center Street, not only features private rooms and bathrooms for firefighters working long hours, but also larger common rooms.

VIDEO: Thirty-six people were injured Sunday, including 11 seriously, when a Hawaiian Airlines flight from Phoenix to Honolulu hit severe turbulence about 30 minutes before landing.
The turbulence sent passengers flying out of their seats.
Paramedics and emergency medical technicians treated patients — ranging in age from 14 months to adults — for a long list of injuries, including serious head injuries, cuts, bruises, nausea, and loss of consciousness.

Matt Greer of Brookhaven was driving home from his shift at the Mississippi Center for Emergency Services, where he works as a flight nurse, when he got a call from his younger sister.
