Inmate firefighter critically injured battling California brush fire

A female inmate firefighter was critically injured after being struck in the head by a boulder while battling a 7-acre brush fire in Malibu Thursday morning, authorities said. Crews were seen performing life-saving measures until a Los Angeles County Fire helicopter arrived and airlifted the injured firefighter to a local hospital.

Wisconsin first responders try new protocol, drive to emergencies without lights, sirens

A nationwide trend has some traveling with the flow of traffic to avoid dangerous collisions.Greenfield firefighters answer some 14 emergency calls a day. Usually, they will head to the scene with lights and sirens blaring, regardless of the seriousness of the emergency.

Michigan firefighter quietly pays $1,000 utility bill for struggling family

Talk about giving back. When Clinton Township firefighters responded to a medical call a couple of weeks ago, they encountered a family in dire need of help. The family, struggling to pay their bills, included two disabled children, and the house had no electricity because the parents had fallen behind on their payment installments.

Phoenix Fire Department, Police Department worked together during house fire with shooter inside

Ex-firefighter gets 5 years in prison for setting California wildfires

A firefighter who admitted setting dozens of fires in an attempt to earn overtime pay and impress his peers was sentenced Tuesday to five years in prison for arson, the U.S. attorney said. Benjamin Cunha, 33, of Placerville (El Dorado County), pleaded guilty in October in U.S District Court in Sacramento to one count of arson for lighting the 80-acre Mine Fire in 2007 while he was a volunteer firefighter in Diamond Springs, near his home.

Two Georgia firefighters arrested in theft from accident scene investigation

Now, four first responders are without a job, two on unpaid leave, after investigators say five of them stole some of those items and another lied about it. Off-duty Ohio firefighter died running into traffic

The Canton woman who died Monday running into rush hour traffic on Ohio 8 after arguing with her husband was identified as an off-duty Canton firefighter. Tonya Johnson, 43, of Canton, died about 4 p.m. Monday after being hit by a pickup on the busy highway. The Summit County Medical Examiner is performing an autopsy Tuesday.

West Virginia Volunteer Fire Department adds ‘In God We Trust’ to fire trucks

Bramwell Volunteer Fire Department added the phrase “In God We Trust” to their fire trucks Saturday afternoon during a fundraising event. Bramwell Volunteer Fire Department 3rd Lt. Steve Mitchell attended the fundraiser and ATV washing event. “We decided we were going to put it on our trucks and hope to be the first one in the area to (put it on the fire trucks),” Mitchell said.

Families of FDNY firefighters killed or injured in Black Sunday blaze in The Bronx awarded $183 million

The jury found the city of New York and the landlord were responsible for the injuries — and assigned 80% of the blame to the city.

Washington fire district’s website hacked over weekend

The website for East County Fire & Rescue was hacked over the weekend, Interim Chief Al Gillespie said. An employee logged onto the website on Saturday morning and noticed that users clicking on a portion of the page were redirected to content he described as “inappropriate,” Gillespie said. The fire chief was in the office for a seminar at the time and was informed of the incident right away.

Lack of North Carolina volunteer firefighters could increase insurance costs

Despite trying for a year to increase the number of volunteer firefighters on its roster, the Elkin Fire Department is seeing little reward to its recruiting efforts. If the department falls below 20 members on its roster, it could mean an increase in property owners’ fire insurance rates, and as of just more than a week ago, the roster had 21 members.
