Chris Rea is expected to return to work as the city’s assistant fire chief on Monday.
During a meeting Tuesday, the Common Council voted unanimously in favor of a $300,000 settlement with Rea. That settlement resolves a nearly four-year legal dispute between Rea and the city that began when Rea was suspended by then-Mayor Shayne Gallo in early 2012.

A 57-year-old fire captain died Wednesday after falling ill while repairing an ambulance.
U.S. Fire Administration reported Peter Larlee, with the East Millinocket Fire Department, had just returned from responding to a medical emergency when he went to the fire department’s engine bay to repair a mud flap on an ambulance.

Flags are flying at half staff in Brookfield this week to honor Marcia Rosecky, a paramedic and the city's first female firefighter.
Rosecky died Saturday after a long battle with leukemia. She was 41.

Topeka city manager Jim Colson’s move to look out of state for an interim fire chief now faces a lawsuit.
R.E. “Tuck” Duncan filed a lawsuit Monday in Shawnee County District Court on behalf of state representative and former city councilman John Alcala, claiming the move violated city ordinance.
