2 Washington fire recruits accused of EMT test cheating, termination recommended

An investigation by the Tacoma Fire Department determined two new recruits cheated on an EMT test and recommended they be terminated, despite acknowledgement from a private company involved that an "administrative error" allowed the pair to get questions ahead of time. A department spokesperson also called the incident "not malicious" and a "coincidence.

EMS panel advising mayor stonewalled by D.C. mayor, fire department

A panel that is supposed to advise D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser on emergency medical services policy says it can’t get any information from the mayor or the fire department in order to make recommendations. “We have got to have the transparency that she says she’s all about,” Anne Renshaw, vice chair of the Emergency Medical Services Advisory Committee (EMSAC), said at a meeting Thursday.

Suspended New York chief receives $300,000 settlement, rehired as assistant chief

Chris Rea is expected to return to work as the city’s assistant fire chief on Monday. During a meeting Tuesday, the Common Council voted unanimously in favor of a $300,000 settlement with Rea. That settlement resolves a nearly four-year legal dispute between Rea and the city that began when Rea was suspended by then-Mayor Shayne Gallo in early 2012.

Maine firefighter dies after falling ill at station

A 57-year-old fire captain died Wednesday after falling ill while repairing an ambulance. U.S. Fire Administration reported Peter Larlee, with the East Millinocket Fire Department, had just returned from responding to a medical emergency when he went to the fire department’s engine bay to repair a mud flap on an ambulance.

Wisconsin town honors female firefighter who battled cancer

Flags are flying at half staff in Brookfield this week to honor Marcia Rosecky, a paramedic and the city's first female firefighter. Rosecky died Saturday after a long battle with leukemia. She was 41. "She was an amazing person," Brookfield Fire Chief Charlie Myers said Wednesday. "She set the example for all the others.

Nebraska captain sues city, chiefs over alleged retaliation

Colorado Springs Fire Chief Riley to retire after 35-year career

Suit filed to halt interim fire chief contract in Kansas

Topeka city manager Jim Colson’s move to look out of state for an interim fire chief now faces a lawsuit. R.E. “Tuck” Duncan filed a lawsuit Monday in Shawnee County District Court on behalf of state representative and former city councilman John Alcala, claiming the move violated city ordinance. The lawsuit seeks a temporary restraining order and injunction to block the city from implementing a contract with Goodyear, Ariz.

New Jersey town rallying to help fire chief rebuild Sandy-damaged house after heart attack

Florida assistant fire chief accused of theft resigns

In Emergencies, Should You Trust a Robot?

In emergencies, people may trust robots too much for their own safety, a new study suggests. In a mock building fire, test subjects followed instructions from an “Emergency Guide Robot” even after the machine had proven itself unreliable – and after some participants were told that robot had broken down.
