New Jersey fire chief retiring in face of improper orders from director, union says

One of the city's two deputy fire chiefs has chosen to retire instead of heed what he believes are improper and unethical orders from Fire Director Qareeb Bashir, a fire union president said Tuesday. Deputy Chief Robert Tharp was promoted earlier this year at a City Hall ceremony and in just over six months as a department leader has made measurable improvements to the department, firefighters' union president Wayne Wolk said.

BBQ Grill Mishap at Fire Station Badly Burns Arizona Captain

A Sedona fire captain badly burned in a fire station fire continues to make progress and has been moved to an acute care unit at burn center. According to a news release from the Sedona Fire Department, Fire Capt. Matt Fleece suffered burns when a bbq grill he had been using near the rear of the station apparently caught fire and exploded.

New study documents overwhelming support of home fire sprinklers by consumers, government officials in states requiring this technology

A new study by the Fire Protection Research Foundation highlights positive opinions of home fire sprinklers by homeowners and most government officials in U.S. states required to fire sprinkler new homes. The new report, “Stakeholder Perceptions of Home Fire Sprinklers,” analyzes the opinions of three groups—government officials, homeowners, and water purveyors—following the passage of statewide requirements for home fire sprinklers.

Firefighters, civilian trapped in Tennesse mountain brush fire

Firefighters and one other person trapped in a mountain fire in Church Hill Tuesday night were reported to be in a safe location. According to Church Hill dispatch, the call about the fire between Mountain View Road and Laurel Run Park Road came in around 7 p.m. Firefighters with Carters Valley and Goshen Valley fire departments were trapped in the fire and two officers were called to the scene.

Baby Wakes Mom in Appleton Townhouse Fire

A woman woke up because of her baby and discovered a fire broke out inside her Appleton townhouse Tuesday. Fire officials say it happened at 1201 Bartell Court around 10:30 a.m. The woman heard her 18-month-old daughter coughing and fidgeting when she spotted the fire. The mom then broke a window in the second floor bedroom and screamed for help.

Green Lake County authorities search for alleged arsonist

Early Sunday morning, the Green Lake County E911 Communications Center received a call of an intentionally set fire at a home on Rex Street in the Town of Marquette. Deputies arrived on the scene to collect information and evidence. An elderly male reported that his 57-year-old daughter had intentionally set a number of fires inside of his residence.

Eau Claire studying pros, cons of new fire station sites

Two of three sites being considered for a new fire station on Eau Claire’s north side would reduce overall response times for ambulance and fire calls, an important factor in determining that station’s location, city Fire Chief Chris Bell said Monday. But both of those sites — on property along Galloway Street across from Indianhead Foodservice Distributor and at a site along Malden Avenue — pose other issues, Bell told the Eau Claire City Council.

As Alissa Routheaux went on a walk with the seven young kids she was watching Monday morning, the group passed a few dozen fire engines and other safety vehicles that were parked up and down a street in her neighborhood. California man picks the wrong 'house' to break into; threatens firefighter

A 23-year-old man picked the wrong Stockton house to break into Monday morning. Jamal Davis, who told authorities he was living under a downtown freeway bridge, allegedly chose one of the busiest firehouses in the city to burglarize. After he was discovered inside Station 2 shortly after 4 a.m., firefighters chased him outside and secured his location for police, who responded quickly.

Disney controlled district rejects decision favoring Florida firefighters' union

The Disney-controlled Reedy Creek Improvement District has rejected a special magistrate's ruling siding with firefighters in a union dispute. Reedy Creek issued a 16-page letter rejecting the magistrate's decision to the Public Employees Relations Commission on Friday. The government agency said the magistrate, James Stokes, issued his decision four months after the deadline.

Plea deal proposed in Texas firehouse sexual assault case

A proposed plea deal in the case of five volunteer firefighters accused of sexually assaulting a colleague in an Ellis County firehouse last year would result in one of them pleading guilty to a misdemeanor assault count and charges being dropped against the others. Eight people were arrested after the January 2015 attack captured in a cellphone video that was allegedly shared with people through a group text.

How fire departments can better serve the elderly

One of the primary responsibilities of every fire department is to understand and best serve the community that supports it. This mission is one of the primary reasons for promoting diversity among department members — to better represent and understand the needs of those served. But there is one demographic that, with rare exception, will never be included among active firefighters, despite a disproportionate involvement with emergency services agencies.

Four Colorado third-grade girls are fire chiefs for a day

PHOTO - The cute quotient of local fire departments increased significantly Monday with the appointment of four adorable third-grade girls as chiefs. And even it was just for a day, it was groundbreaking. “To my knowledge, this is the first time we’ve had four girls win the contest,” said Erik Duran, a spokesman for the Pueblo Fire Department.
