Georgia firefighter honored for saving fellow firefighter's life

VIDEO - An Albany Firefighter earned the department's highest honor after saving a fellow worker's life. Tawanna Maples was honored as the Albany Firefighter of the Year at Tuesday night's city commission meeting. In June, she quickly administered the Heimlich maneuver when another firefighter began chocking at a firehouse.

Two California firefighters arrested after off-duty attack on cops, police say

Two Contra Costa firefighters and their companions were arrested early Sunday morning in a hotel room after a drunken attack that injured two Walnut Creek police officers, police said Tuesday. The melee happened around 5 a.m., just hours after the Second Annual Firefighters Ball at the Marriott Walnut Creek hotel had ended.

Switzerland tells slightly tipsy volunteer firefighters: Cheers!

Switzerland is easing an alcohol ban for volunteer firefighters and other emergency workers using heavy vehicles, saying it had led to staffing shortages when crises demanded quick action, especially in smaller towns lacking professional personnel. Starting on Jan. 1, slightly tipsy volunteer firefighters and off-duty members of so-called professional "blue light" organizations responding to urgent situations will be no longer face punishment - provided their blood-alcohol level does not exceed 0.

Texas fire union: 16 suspensions this month were ‘over-punishing’

Fire destroys The Real McCoy's pub and grill in Whitewater

The Real McCoy's tavern was destroyed in an early Tuesday morning fire. “It is a total loss,” Whitewater Fire Chief Don Gregoire said. Damage is estimated at $400,000 damage, he said. When Walworth County sheriff's deputies arrived at the tavern, W8632 County A, they found flames shooting out of the windows of the 2,000-square-foot establishment, he said.

Beaver Dam committee talks about drug detective and paramedic positions

Alderpersons in Beaver Dam’s Administrative Committee felt confident moving forward with the 2017 preliminary budget after Monday night, which include a drug detective position, full time paramedic and an off-leash dog area. The proposed net tax levy is a 1.5 percent increase amounting to a more than $147,000 bump over this year.

Pennsylvania volunteer firefighter with cerebral palsy inspires other first responders

VIDEO - Riding in a ladder truck bucket 67 feet in the air, Newberry Township volunteer firefighter Cody Zinn kept repeating the same thing. "Holy crap," said the 21-year-old as smoke from the home below reached high above his head. Zinn, who has cerebral palsy, was surprised with the ride in the ladder truck by Don Young, the assistant chief of the department.

Boston city fire marshal files lawsuit against the Red Sox

A black Boston Fire Department inspector filed a lawsuit against the Boston Red Sox on Friday, six months after a black co-worker sued the team over an incident in which both men allege they were denied entry to Fenway Park to perform a safety inspection because of their race. Rhoan Dalmar, a city fire marshal, filed the civil complaint in Suffolk Superior Court.

Arizona Hotshots memorial trail nearly complete

A trail that will lead visitors to the site where 19 Granite Mountain Hotshots died fighting the 2013 Yarnell Hill Fire is now nearly complete. Arizona State Parks officials reported this week that the Yarnell park that will honor the fallen Hotshots is expected to be finished and open to the public by late November.

Nebraska Fire Marshal: Living room fireplace ignited fire that killed family of 6

An investigative team with the Nebraska State Fire Marshal's Office says a living room fireplace is what started a fire that killed all six members of the Speer family on October 20th. Mike and Michelle Speer, with their four children all died in the blaze. A family member said firefighters found each of their bodies in beds.

Massachusetts Firefighters Spend Five Hours Removing Bodies from Fiery Wreck

A heartbroken dad whose son was killed in a fiery head-on collision on Interstate 495 in Middleboro said "I love them all" as he spoke of his boy and three college buddies who died in a midnight crash police said was caused by a wrong-way driver. State police said the Sable was struck head-on by a 31-year-old woman behind the wheel of a 2011 Infiniti G37 headed southbound on northbound I-495 just after midnight yesterday.

1 dog killed, 2 others survive New London house fire

No one injured in Town of Sheboygan house fire

Firefighters battled a house fire in the Town of Sheboygan on Monday afternoon. Firefighters responding to the structure fire at approximately 11 a.m. on Monday saw smoke billowing from the home. All residents of the home, which is located on County Road Y, were accounted for and were not in the home at the time of the fire, according to the Sheboygan County Sheriff's Office.
