Ohio firefighter shot at scene of house fire

Youngstown police confirmed that a Youngstown firefighter was shot Monday after responding to a fire. It began when crews were called about 9 p.m. to a house fire at Halleck and Elm streets. As crews were leaving the scene around 10:30 p.m., shots were fired and bullets came through the fire truck, hitting a firefighter in the leg.

'I'm not going to answer these questions': Oakland warehouse manager anguished in interview

Crescent Town Fire Department fundraising for new pavilion, community area

VIDEO: The Crescent Fire Department spent years trying to find a good place for a town pavilion. It turns out the best spot was right in its own backyard. The department plans to build that pavilion right behind the Crescent Town Hall off Golf Course Road just west of Rhinelander. Madison: Opioid overdose calls nearly double, meaning increased use of anti-overdose drug

Racine woman rebuilding life after fire, displacement

Cheryl Weill, 50, decided not to go grocery shopping. Though her Friday after-work routine typically included such a trip, she decided not to Aug. 26. As death toll rises to 36 in Oakland fire, hazard halts search

The death toll in the devastating Oakland warehouse fire climbed to 36 early Monday as officials said the search for more bodies had to halted due to precarious conditions just after they found what they suspect is the area where the blaze started. The number of victims recovered from the gutted building grew by three overnight, but work on recovering more bodies was stopped just after midnight due to a “wobbly” wall that was leaning inward and making the situation too dangerous for firefighters to continue, said Battalion Chief Melinda Drayton of the Oakland Fire Department.

Illinois town settles with firefighter dismissed following on-duty phone sex probe

An Oak Lawn firefighter who was dismissed in February after being accused of dialing phone sex providers while on duty has reached a six-figure settlement agreement with the village over his termination, officials said. Robert Lanz, a 15-year veteran of the Oak Lawn Fire Department, will receive a combined $100,000 — $42,040 for his accrued paid time-off benefits and an additional sum of $57,960 — and have all records of being disciplined over the phone sex allegations rescinded and removed from his personnel file, according to the terms of the agreement.

Arizona fire department hires first woman chief

The City of Mesa has hired a new fire chief, a trailblazer for individuals in her department. Mary Cameli was among the first women firefighters hired by Mesa 33 years ago, and now she is the new chief of the Fire and Medical Department. She was appointed the interim chief on Oct 4 to replace retired Chief Harry Beck, and her permanent position as chief became official on Thursday.
