Driver hits Indiana firefighter, flees scene

A Muncie firefighter had a close call after a driver hit him and took off. First responders were on the scene of a gas leak near McGalliard and Reserve Street Thursday morning. Police officers and firefighters were helping direct traffic due to road closures. Surveillance video from a nearby business shows a firefighter motioning a vehicle and then seconds later he tries jumping out of the way to avoid a driver hitting him from behind.

NYC will add firefighter who died in 1935 to memorial wall

New York City will add the name of a firefighter who died in 1935 to the Fire Department of New York's memorial wall, the city's law department said Wednesday, ending a year-long struggle by his descendants who insisted his death was due to an injury he suffered while battling a blaze. The grandson of firefighter Tom O'Brien went to court in October to get him added to the wall that honors those firefighters who died as a result of a fire.

Column: Los Angeles shooting a reminder to firefighters of the danger of criminal intent

In the early morning hours of April 24, members of the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a reported fire south of downtown LA. While extinguishment was an expected knockdown inside a two-story home, gunshots ringing out during overhaul were not.

North Carolina Firefighter With Cochlear Implants Wants To Change Fitness Requirements

Austin Freidt, a 19-year-old Mocksville firefighter, was born deaf. He had his first ear surgery at 2 years old, and then got his first cochlear implant on his left ear when he was 3. In 2012, he got one in his right ear, which allowed him to hear just like anyone else. He’s wanted to become a firefighter since he was 5 years old.

Local fundraising scam targets Little Chute Fire Department

The mailer explains why you are receiving the donation form and offers multiple ways for you to make your payment.

At Least 5 Injuries in Superior Explosion

The Superior Fire Department says there are no fatalities in the explosion at the Husky oil refinery, at least 5 Injuries have been reported. The explosion happened at about 10:06 a.m. at the refinery, which is in the city's East End. The nature of the casualties was not immediately disclosed.A contractor who was inside the building told Eyewitness News it sounded like "a sonic boom.

Oregon area controlled burn leads to structure fire causing $30,000 in damage

A controlled burn in the Town of Oregon got out of control Wednesday evening and ignited a structure fire, officials said. Firefighters with the Oregon Area Fire and EMS District were dispatched to the structure fire around 5:45 p.m. at 585 Tipperary Road. When crews arrived, they found a shed fully engulfed by fire with some extension into nearby vegetation, according to a news release from the district.

Spooner Firefighter Dies from Heart Attack after Response

A veteran firefighter in a small community in northwestern Wisconsin has died following a response. The U.S. Fire Administration on Thursday announced the line-of-duty death of 69-year-old Spooner volunteer firefighter Philip H. Neubich, who was a 38-year veteran of the fire service. Late on Tuesday evening, Neubich responded to his fire station when the department was paged out for a reported gas leak inside a residence.

Albany City Manager Sharon Subadan announced at Tuesday’s Albany City Commission meeting that Cedric Scott has been named the city’s new fire chief. Scott, who currently is serving as fire chief for the city of Suffolk, Va., and has served in that position in Waycross, College Park and Rockdale County in Georgia, is expected to take over the Albany Fire Department in June.

Thousands of firefighters gather for FDIC in Indianapolis

The Fire Department Instructors Conference also known as the FDIC, is happening downtown. It's back for another year at the Indiana Convention Center. More than 33,000 firefighters from around the world are in downtown Indianapolis this week for the event. It's known as the world's largest firefighter conference.

Michigan town moves to demote fire chief after alleged policy violations

Longtime Frankfort Fire Department Chief Charles Thompson is unsure if he wants to accept a demotion after city officials removed him from the helm of his own department. Report shows Rhode Island Naval Station falsified first responder training records

Multiple fire departments respond to Town of Marathon grass fire

Fire crews responded to a grass fire off County Road O in the Town of Marathon Wednesday afternoon. SAFER Chief Matt Savage says the call came in before 4 PM. A large field was in flames upon their arrival. Additional crews from Marathon Fire, Mosinee Fire and Wausau DNR responded. Firefighters spent the next two hours extinguishing the blaze and putting out hotspots.

Wisconsin State Fire Chiefs Association Creates Mental Health Task Force

The Wisconsin State Fire Chiefs Association has created a task force to help firefighters who are struggling with mental health issues. The association’s president Jon Cohn said they hope the task force will provide a statewide network of support to firefighters who are struggling with mental health issues.
